Forty-one missionaries took refuge in boats, losing all their personal effects. A general destruction of foreign property followed. Japanese and foreignowned . warehouses and shipping were looted and burned, only tlie British Consulate being unharmed. , . . : The troops did not interfere. The Chinese officials are helpless, and declare that they cannot help foreigners. , They have, therefore, ordered the mission stations throughout the Hnnan province to ho abandoned.' • : . • |. The viceroy of Hnpeh province has sent 2000 troops to Changs&a. Otners will follow. : . ■ ' . Mr. Hewlett, British Consul, has chartered two steamers to receive refugees, .including, 70 Japanese. The shallowness of the Siang-Kiang River J prevented the British gunboat Thistle from reaching Changsh.a. An unfortunate incident of the Thistle's expedition was that she ■ collided, with a junk, which had no lights, which was currying three German missionaries escaping to' Hankow. The missionaries were drowned. . Other missionaries are safe at Hankow.
