'■",'■■' :'■'.] The; death is reported from Hokitika. of the Hon. Jas. Holmes, M.L.C., who had reached' the advanced age of 79 years. Deceased, who was a native of Sussex, England, came,out in 1852 to Australia, , where he engaged in gold mining and his trade as a painter in several places. In 1861 he came to New Zealand, and after following his trade in Dunedin for some time, removed in 1865 to Hokitika, where he carried on business for many years. He was a member of the local Harbour Board, the Licensing Bench, , the High School Board, and other public bodies, and was at one time captain of the local fire brigade.. In 1902.he was appointed to the Legislative Council by the late Mr. Seddon. Deceased was twice married, and leaves a grown-up family ,of five sons and six daughters. ...!';.. Mr; and Mrs. T. G. Russell, of Christchurch, who have spent the past twelve months .touring the world, are • expected. to arrive in Wellington to-morrow by the steamer, dne Sydney. Mr. Hngh Paton, who has been doing evangelistic work in connection with the Presbyterian Church in Australia foi some years, and who was recently in Wellington, is seeking ordination as an evangelist. A petition from lit. Paton to this effect was received by the Presbytery of Sydney last week, and it was decided to recommend the Assembly to grant-tho application.. ■. The Governors of' Wellington College (England) have appointed Mr. W. W. Bretherton, of the Public Trnst Office, was twe< sented by his friends and well-wishers in tho office- with, a solid silver tea service, as an appropriate gift on the occasion of his approaching marriaga. Dr. Ktoheft made the presentation. Mr. Bretherton's fiancee, Miss Kolly, wascmtertaaaed by the staff in (3ie afternoon, and in. tie evening Sir. Bretharton and Miss Kelly, were the guests of the choir of at Joseph's Church, BucHe Street, on which occasion Mr. • Bretterton was made' the recipient of a handsome Eirrer-mounted • oak tray. . .
