SALVAGING THE KOI. OPERATIONS TEMPORARILY DISCONTINUED. The misfortune that has attended the salvage operations at the wreck of the ICoi, outside the Boulder Bank, culminated on Friday morning, when the strong northerly blow and the high seas drove her on her beam ends again, and carried away the funnel, reports a Nelson exchange. As a consequelioe, tile pumping and refloating have been suspended for the present, and the Tera-whiti has returned to Wellington. A survey of the Koi was to be mode at low water on Saturday morning, if the weather permitted, when future work will be decided upon. On tho Thursday evening pumping operations wore started at low tide. Tho Terawhiti's 10inch pump liad previously been Used into the saloon, compartment, and the 6-inch pump into the engine-room. The former nump worked well, and although only driven at three-quarters speed, soon lifted a tremendous Quantity of water out of tho saloon. The small pump, however, could not bo got to go, and as it was necessary that the two compartments should bo pumped out simultaneously in order to keep the vessel on an even keel if possible, work was discontinued. The 6-inch jjunu) is beine overhauled. i

INTERNATIONAL LOADLINE; Apropos of the : cablegram received last week;, which stated that Denmark, Sweden, and the Netherlands, had joined Britain, France, and Germany in reciprocally recognising tho load marks of each, an excliango says-.—.There is probably no Question which has caused more annoyance to British shipowners as it concerned foreign competition than that of the loadline. For years British ships were bound by . the . Plimsoll mark, but foreigners competing against' them could load their ships down until they were almost sinking if they so desired, as they were under no regulation on this head. The first step in the direction of improving the lot- of the British •owner was brought about some eighteen ninths ago, when the Board of Trade raised the loadline of British ships and at the same time made it compulsory that foreigners must comply with thia regulation when either ' arriving at or ; sailing from a British port. The raising of tho loadline was justified by the olHcial opinion that the improved constructon of the modem vessel warranted the in-, crease. In the.case of the British ships ! this meant an increased capacity of about one million and a half tons. Since the new regulations came into force several conferences have been held between tho authorities controlling the shipping qfeach nation, and apparently eome' ar'* rangement has been come to whereby tlw- 1 adoption of an international loadline will be only a matter of time. Germany and?" France some time ago adopted the Plim*' soil mark, and it is apparent thatr-now, with the co-operation of Great v ßnttuh, they have induced Denmark, Sweden,, and the Netherlands to join them in this very laud-able scheme for the safeguarding of . , a F? property. Norway,. wftlu'a considerable fleet, and the chiefjrcifFender: in tho matter of overloading, joined 1IJ M the union, but no doubt pressure will be brought to bear on^iHe'Norseman that he • will be compelled 'fo fall into line with, the other natitiifs. -.

The Shaw, Savill steturier: Athemc, from London, is 'due thisisrijoVning, -and' will commenoe.discrhargiTjg/immediately on arrival at- O.ueen's Whaff. . • : After discharging at Auckland; th® Kurow is to dock there • and return to tho West Coast;to load for Albany. i The Shaw, SaviH and Albion liner lonic ; leaded the following cargo, at.Lyttelton for I London carcasseß mutton and I lamb, 25 : cases .preserved meats, 245 sacks | peas, 604 casks tallow, 211 casks pelts. 47 casks .'casing's,' 2102 bales wool, 4 bales s&eepskintf,:'33io crate's cheese, and 6 pacta ages; sundries. • . . . • .Thfc scow. NgaTu, after having mads .tnreo .atterppts to ;get away .for Wellington, i3:.again in the shelter of Port Levy, says _ the "Lyttelton Times" of Saturday. •The ,-limitcd sailing powers of a scow^db. • mand a wind which is at least reasonably pJid the little vessel found it impossible . to make any progress against the-prevailing'northerly wind-3 of the past few days. On Friday morning the. tug ran \down to, the bay - and spoke .the Ngaru,' ;rcceiying a. reply that all was well on board. -; • \'- The Georgia did not have a very good -discharge at Wellington, "and she - has i taken. on a total of 90.000 cases of oil for I southern ports. Of this total 12,000 cases 1 were consigned to Wellington. The'vessel' I is being pushed ahead because of charter [arrangements..

There were no movements from Greymouth on Saturday. A very heavy sea v was running in tho bar, and there was & strong frc-sh in the river. ' ' -Tho-Flora, which.left for Picton, NclsosV •. and tho west Coast on Saturday in tho ' run of. the Arahura,' will go ! right' through : to j Grey mouth, and will then give way tc ' the Arahura,. which will complete .-fclU . voyage, and so take up her old miming.' • The Flora will probably return to WeK luigton with a cargo of coal. •The Ripple, which is row on her way from Lyttelton to the Chatham' Islands, has finished her .special sheep season trade, and on th©\ present trip she will .• make calls all * round the Islands as: in . her regular mail trips. On returning to >* Lyttelton she will, enter the coastal trade > ' ; until her next contract visit to the,', Chathams. is duo. Owing to the Te Anau being bar-bound at Greymouth, says the Christchurch Press, the Kittawa has been dispatched' from Lyttelfcon. to Dunedin to take upthe Te Anau's running., She will leaveLyttalton' to-morrow for "Wellington, New • Plymouth, Westport, and Greymouth.' ' The -Waipori, which arrived at Melbourne from Kaipara last week with a; : load of timber, will probably be delaved in Australia owing to the strike of timber •• porkers.. r ' . - The' Kapuni did not'sail forr Patea,'laS^ 1 night as . expected, advice having been ro* -:C ceived that the bar was not-workable.:-
