(By ToleeraDh.—Srecial CorresDondent.l Wanganiii, April 15. .Owing to tho : apparent, .powerlessness of'tlie Government in. the matter of stopping the felling of the bush on tho banks of tho river,'.the recentlyformed Beautifying Society has rosolved to communicate with the . Premier, and the Hon.-Thos. Mackenzie urging the Government to take the necessary steps to pa,ss such legislation,as would give them legal power to enable tho necessary scenery reservations to bo made. The construction of the. Ahu Ahu telephone line has now reached as far as AVaihape, 42 miles from Wangaiiui, andi when.completed, will prove a great boon to settlers. The latter are reported to bo prospering fairly well though still groatly handicapped by want of access to their holdings. Tho completion of the proposed ferry across tho Wanganiii River will give them a great lift, but at present, tho matter appears to be hung up. The Waitotara County Council is' ready to instal it, and submitted plans to tho Roads Department some time ago for their approval. This, however, is tho last which tho council has heard of tho matter, and meanwhile the vote has lapsed.
