NOTES AND COMMENTS.

[By Glencoe.] • Tho Hastings trainer, P. Davis, camo on to Wellington from Palmorston North, and took Bobrikoff home on Thursday. Tho son of Finland was in good condition on landing here, and the trip has dono him no harm. The southern hprsos Danube and Vice Admiral wero only raced on the first day- of tho Awapuni fixture, and next morning they were railed to Wellington, and sent south the same, evening. Mr. F. Gardiner, of Oaniaru, offered to buy Penates last week, but his new owner was not disposed to treat for his purchase.' ■..'.'■ By the Ulimaroa, which arrived here on Wednesday,- the Forirua trainer, J H. l'rosser, received two fillies that wero purohased by patrons of his stable at tho Sydney yearling sales. One is a remarkably good-looking youngster, by Malster, that will carry the colours of the Dunedm sportsnian,'■ "Mr. J. Brett," and the other is one of tho Birkenhead youngsters, that was sent over for sale by the Hon. J. D. Orniond. The last-named is owned by tho Waikanae breeder, Mt. I. G. Duacan. She will be raced by Mr. Prosser oil ■ lease, and after her racing caieer mil go to the, Waikanae,'Stud.

i Tho two-year-bid Turna, by. Stopniak -rFairymaid, who has been turned out at Waikanao during the summer owing to soreness, will, return , to Porirua today and resume training. .By the satno ■tram the Kilohoran—lshtar filly that was purchased at the Eldorslio salo,in November, will come to. Porirua to. join the active brigade. '.;.'.

. Thoso: interested are given a final reminder-that entries for - the Marlborough meeting are due this evening.

• Golden Loop has now thrown off the effects of the chill which he contracted at Trentham. Hβ was started on both days at Awapuni, but was. unable to show his.best form there. The New Plymouth' horse' is a very long-striding animal, and in soft going he is unable to hit out, Ho was taken homo yesterday, and, will be ! given a short spell after which ho will be raced at Wanganui neitmonth. ■ "-.'. The Foxton, horseman,, R.'Lambcss, will'be a. passengcrfor -Nelson -..to-day,, where he has, seyeral engagements to ride next w«?k. . . ... '.'■; ... .-■ Judging by his. showing .at,. Awapuni,, when lie w«a heavily bacied each d»y, Lord Soult seonisto have.lost, his pace;. : and in his races 'he failed to get bis usual break on 'the. field in. the. first couple of furlongs.': : .."■-.,■- ■"■-.-.■. .Sir Antrim was. lamo: behind 'after racing in tho tpngburn Hhndjcap on Weduesdaj, and though accepted for on tho second day the pen was' put through bis name',. __.•"'.■ ■■ ■. •'. ..- .. ..

While at the Manaiyatu meeting with King Soult, the VSYaikatp ■ trainer,;- R. Hannon,; received' wqrTd,,-,that..Saluto's, condition.was not imp'rdvirigj "arid ho hastened home ' to, .see.'what'cpuld bo done for the.Soult is' Lose injuries; , it is'feared, may,prove:fatal./.- : ... . :,

,"'. The Chokebora '..pair,;., Flitaway and Madam Madcap, were.shipped to.Lyttel-"! ton last night, 'in charge: , of' their trainer, ,H. Cutts; . Cutts will bring a fresh team to Hastings, and will probably arrive there next Saturday. .

On all sides it admitted that the field which contested . the Manawatu Stakes was the .. most representative seen out ,in a classic .race for many yfiars. As usual the element of luck entered largely, into the contest,' and, while not, wishing to decry the meritorious victory of Polymorphous, it is to be regretted that Danube > ran, so wide a,t the -home turn, when possessing a loadof fully two lengths. : ■ , -

The .Highden,'private: trainer, G. Price turned out four winners at the Manawatu meeting, and the reported successes of 'tho.". Palmerston Northowned horses was very well received by the.lopal ' people. Price is a most' attentive mentor, and he fully deserves his measure, of succoss. " - •,:

. .'lt, is quite within the bounds, of possibility that one of tho leading Wairaropa clubs, which, at present, holds two meetings in a, year, may shortly hand in one of its totalisator permits. ' '

The Wairarapa light-weight jockey, Stan. Roid, who has been having some -success in the saddle lately, will, in future, do the light-weight riding for the Highdon stable, while A. Oliver will, as usual, have the.mounts on'the Bst; and upwards. division. ' '"■■■■.

Formerly the Eiccarton-owned Soult gelding, Silkweb/'used to be. a' very quick peginner,' and .win his races from the.barrier, but at the 0.J.0. Autumii ■fixture he began slowly aiid seemed to finish very. fast. This impressed his owner so much that he has now decided to try him over longer distances, and he is to be given a run in the Tiinaru Cup, of 1} miles. ) Tho light-weight jockey, C. Emerson, has been engaged to ndo him. , '•'....

The Birkenhead mare Parula lightened up a good deal after racing at Trentham, and though she showed plenty of paeo in her Awapuni races, she failed in the final furlong.on each day. ...

Tho diminutive . Toanga was en trusted with a goodly amount of coin in the Borough Handicap at Awapuni, but, though he showed a bold front from the, barrier,- and at the concluding stages, the majority ■ of tho field beat him for" paco in the middle stages of the race. Wilson's horse looked rather too much on the round side, arid the gallop should work a big improvement in/him. ■ '

Tho dispute over the ownership of the Malachi gelding Marton has been settled without tho threatened legal proceedings, and the horse will continue to run in .Mr. G. Morris's interest. . , .

A very speedy sort of youngster in tho Papakura colt Vibration made bis appearance at Awapuni on Thursday in the' Juvenile Handicap. Ho began very smartly and kept company with the useful Emblem to the tnrn, where his condition failed, and ho retired. On that performance he looks to be tho makings of : another Aberbrothock.

The racing Inspection is getting is having a very beneficial effect on Mr. Bidwill's: colt, and his form at Awapuni suggested that he is on tho upward grade. He is to make the trip to Hastings and will probably take part in the Nursery Handicap on the first day and the Hawke's Bay Stakes on the second day.

A Hastings owner recently inquired the price of Wimmqra with a viow to turning him into a jumper, but at the price asked,- viz., 500 guineas, no business rosulted.

Tho ownor of Waikaraka gave his horse a chance second to nono in the Farewell Handicap at. Awapuni, but when the rain came on he put the pen through his name, _bb in his previous races the son of Waiuku has not shown a partiality, for the soft going.,

Attention had been highly tried before being taken from Fordcll to Awapuni, and supporters of Tilley's stable sent her out favourite in the Woodhoy Hack Handicap, but in the running tbo Advance mare was nover a winner, and nor owner was quite at a loss to account for hor poor showing. Guiding Step may be tried at hurdle racing in the near future.

MARLBOROUCH R.C. MEETINC,

Nominations for tho Marlborough Racing Club's Autumn meeting, to be hold on May 4 and 5, close with the secretary, Mr. L. Griffiths, at Blenheim this evening at 9 o'clock. As tlie stakes havo been considerably increased, and every effort has been made by the committee of the club for the comfort and pleasure of visitors, there should no douht bo a good response from northern owners.
