FIRES IN THE CITY.
About 6.20 p.m. yesterday; ■ the brigade was summoned' to an outbreak of .nre which had been, discovered in a three-storied brick; building in Singer's Avenue, just behind Carroll's corner, used by Charles. Johnson-as a cabinetmaker's,.workshop,.,, and,..owned by the trustees <of 'the , Jacob Joseph Estate. When' the brigade arrived the fire was burning fiercely on the third floor, which was severely damaged before the outbreak was got under control. The remainder of the building was slightly damaged by water. The insurances,' so far as they are known, are, as follow:—Commercial Union, £300; New Zealand Insurance Office, £300. The Liverpool,: London, and Globe office also has a'line in the building,, but the amount is not known. About an-hour later the brigade was called out tea fire in No. 7 Blucher Avenue,: off ■ Mein Street, a six-roomed residenco owned, and occupied by Mr. Geo. Pudney. The two back rooms, kitchen'and scullery, were badly damaged, while the rest of the house suffered slightly. It is understood that the contents of the building were insured in the South British Insurance Company. The outbreak was set down to a stray spark from the copper fire.
