RUSSIAN MODES.
After years of cutting, ourselves,in .two at the waist (says a Melbourne paper) ire haye now decided 'for a change to divide ourselves ,, '■ 'i'his'.'is. tho outcome, of the rage for 'Russian modes.. and though the princess effect is .seen on top ; di' most of the newest models the•■ plain' eel-like' sheath is abruptly turned into a pleated skirt from tho knee.downwards, 'i'here is every indication of our taking very kindly to the Russian coat and skirt, for it has much-to recommend it, especially to the woman who has a couple of good skirts iii hand.- Supposing these to be, say, one of navy blue serge, and the other a tweed mixture, in-which dark blue appears, a Russian coat of one : of the new materials (which have a surface" with, a knitted pattern , effect) would look - exceedingly well. Care must be taken to see that/the coat , 'material exactly matches the serge' in tone and thoroughly harmonises, with the tweed. If either skirt ■ be, of. brown'cloth, or one of tho popular heather mixtures, a belted coat of brown velveteen of good quality,', would undoubtedly be very successful. The reason why '.velveteen is not recommended for the navy, blue costume is that in such a case neither velvet nor its cotton replica would look'well, and the same may be said: of any of the. crimson . or wine tones.'. Nowadays 'few women ever dream of attempting to wear ■ a, navy, blue silk or satin gown, and experiments with red in similar textures usually end in sad failure. But, on -the other 'hand, 'there are few colours so useful or. successful in woollen materials, and this will be quickly realised by anyone giving the matter due consideration. Even for childien's, wear, the/always popular red or blue coats . are infinitely better look-, ing in serge or frieze than in the corudroy velveteen that so many mothers believe in. : •.'•"■■
