MANAWATU R. C. MEETING. CONCLUDING DAY. TEUGANINI WINS THE CUP. (By Telesraph.-Bpecial Eeporter.) Palmerston, April 14. The Manawatu Hacing Club's autumn meeting was concluded to-day in tvretched weather. Just after the Borough Handicap had been run heavy rain commenced to fall, and continued during the rest of tho day. Tho ground speedily became- too wet to be comfortable, and large crowds left the course before the racing was orer. This naturally caused a considerable falling off in the totalisator returns. The sum of .£14,946 was put through the machine for the two days, which is i4Bl less than the amount for the corresponding meeting last year. Appended are the results:— TIBITEA HACK HURDLES of ' 100 sots.; second horse to receive 15 sots., and third horse 5 sovs. from the stake. One mile and a-half. 2 Mr. W. J. Douglas's b. g. Nightmare, although raised a ston6 and lllb. for her win on the previous day, was again made favourite iii trie-Hack Hurdles, She was ridden differently to-day, being kept in behind the leaders, ami, no doubt, this was the best course to pursue, as she is not adapted to weight-carrying. Lothair, accompanied by Jackman, led for a mile, when the latter fell back. Nightmare then, ran up to the leader, and Pikopo also improved his position. Lothair led over the last fence, and beat the others for pace in the run home. Tho alleged interference, if any, was of a most trivial nature, and quite accidental. Ascalon was again mado favourite in the Hack Flying Handicap, with Moi-eo next in demand. The favourite began smnrtly, and, with Blond, led down the back. At'tho turn the field, closed up, and, in a good finish, Waiouru won by a conple of-lengths. Leolanter came from a long way behind, and just cut Morco out of second place. Tho favourite was fourth. '.- . There was a long delay at the barrier in the next race, and the horses were out for fully forty minutes, as Ballavat refused to join her field, and was responsible for the delay; At the rise 'of the barrier Toanga was first to move, but several horses soon .headed him, the most prominent being Hermia and Parula. At the turn Toanga, Ballarat, and Nyland put in challenges, and, in a splendid finish, the Finland gelding won by a length, with the rest of the field close up. Ballarat, favoured by a fortunate run on tho rails, looked a winner when passing tho stewards' stand, but she died away. Nyland was ridden a Tory good raco by Reid, and, when he swooped down on the outside of the field, he (Illicitly placed tho issue beyond doubt. The i'nvo.urito ran a good raco to the turn, but the weight eventually stopped her. The Dominion Cup was run in very heavy rain, but the time put up was surprisingly good. Mulga Bill led the way to the turn, where Truganini, who had been second throughout, came on, and won easily. Woodhey and Lady
Monschikoff had a good set-to for second money. Teotane again broke n bloodvessel and tailed off. • . .... Despito the rain, which, however, was lessening somewhat, the public camo out of shelter to put solid support on Royal ilaid in the Ava. Hack Welter, :nt she failed badly against Marathon who revelled in the heavy going. The favourite was kept too far out of it in the early stages of the race. Captain finished a hundred yards behind the other horses. Celacno and Waiariki, who wero well supported, failed to run prominently. King Sonlt, who is not suited for heavy going, and Excel, .who is not class for such company, were withdrawn from the Juvenile field. The Highden bracket (Boanerges and Gloss) was in strong demand, and it won, though only after n splendid contest between Boanerges and Emblem, the former again getting a fortunate run'.on. the rails. Emblem: led with Vibration at the start, but in the straight, Oliver brought Boanerges along, and Price going out in an endeavour to get better going was caught and .passed. Golden Loop, who was slow to find his feet, finished very fast, and got right up , to Emblem. . ' There were only four runners in the concluding event in which the betting underwent several changes. Bourrasque opened favourite, but solid support was soon forthcoming for Marton and Perolina, and this caused , the favourite to ease somewhat, though he maintained his position as first choice. Perolinaled off at a great pace and was first to the turn where the quartet closed up and a grand finish resulted. Splash got a lucky run through on the rails, but had she been compelled to go round, she would have finished out of a place—so closo were all the horses,as they passed the judge. • . . .. . A curious position arose ia connection with the Ladies' Bracelet Handicap, to be'decided at the New Brighton Trotting Club's meeting on Saturday. There are fifty acceptors, and as it would be obviously dangerous, if not' impossible, to start all at once, the club decided to run two heats, and the final question then arose how the totalisator should be operated. Now it has been decided to open the machine separately for .'each.- heat and closo. it for. the final, then pool the investments ;and pay out on the first and second horses in the final. One or two owners object to running the race in heats, and may apply for a refund of race fees. . AGAINST BOOKMAKERS. ANOTHER NEW YORK STATE BILL. B j Tclecrapu—Press. Association—CoDrrteh;.
