V -.; - ...' NOTES;ON THE; RACING.? : _ Pikopo was 'made a strong order in the first race," but the heavy wind blowing , did-not. assist him, and he was never able, to get within fifty yards of > Night-mare,-who led the whole war, and won by fully, fifty yards. New aspirants for jumpiug honours—Atc Light and Reretoa —made their appearance in • this ' race. The former showed, ability, but the latter , was'tailed off the whole way. '• •nT I> , , ! Ilt?: ; ! ; an - USJy. rebuff in' the Hack Welter Handicap, when■'• Asw.lon,- r'dden by ..Jenkins, failed to land the heavy'investments on him. He began smartly; but Emblem' was always : dangerous and in- fhi;'.end sho won easily, though on the machine she : was not so supported as she should have, been," con--1 sidering.her previous form. Leolanter I -was just clear of Morce, and then came the favourite, who had a. good run on the rails, tho whole v;ay. The winner' ■was fractious at tho barrier, and caused i oonsiderablo delay.

The way was then cleared for the big event, which was expected to be a close and exciting race. Shrewd judges selected tho older horses to win, as the going, it was 1 - thought,: would militate against tho youngsters,,. and . though the distance would be in their favour,'they would bo unable to keep -up the pace. This view of things'proved, correct. ..-After a.little delay, caused. by Excel failing to go into lino, the field were got away, but ViceAdmiral, Excel, and Madam Madcap were plow (o move, the last-named particularly fo. When they were in-their stride, WarRing, Formby, and Danube was the order with Mr. Lowry's colt in the lead. In the next division were Penates, Lord Kelvin,. King Soult, and Polymorphous, At the home turn WaTsong stopped, and eo did Formby, while Danube ran out badly.- Hatch then brought up Penates, but before he realised it Oliver was level with him on Polymorphous, and, finishing the stronger of the pair, he won by a length. Formby was fourth, and WarBong fifth. Lord 'Soult was made favourite in the Telegraph Stakes/but he had Parula with him the whole way, and she worried him down by the home turn. Here the field was bunched, with Hermia,

Parula; and St. Bill prominent. In the straight the Karamu marc swung out slightly, and in less time than it takes to write it Boanerges had slipped up, and this won him the.race. Overtime finished fast, and just headed Parula, while Herriiia stopped badly in the last chain, and a similar remark applies to St. Bill. In the Longbnrn Handicap the public had great 'difficulty in finding a favourite, and several of the candidates were evenly backed. From a good start First Battery was first to begin, but going out of the straight he was headed by Merrie Rose, who,set a very fast pace. With six furlongs to go, Woodhey went" past First Battery, and at this stage she and Memo Rosa were out bv themselves. But North East was at the" head of the others,, and pulling hard across the bottom the two leaders wero still out, but at the straight' North East had collared Woodhey. Then Mendip appeared witli a great .sprint, and, smothering everything for pace, he won by a couple of lengths. Woodhey was iourth and Trugnnini fifth. North East seemed to bo feeling the effects of the hard racing which he has had, and was in trouble at. the finish. . Attention" and/Splash were the best backed mounts in the Woodhey. Hack Handicap, but a surprise was in store for investors, for Mulga Bill and Waitoto drew out from the field, and led the whole way. The favourite .was well placed early in the race, but lie could not keep his position, and finished in the ruck.' The winner was quietly backed at long prices, by. soveral track watchers who had seen him do a convincing gallop on Tuesday morning. John finished in the rear, and Strathnioira was another horse that ran badly..'

' The favourite, llarton, prevailed in the. concluding event in a .very easy manner over -Waikaraka and Boin-rasquc. Perolinn was the first to move, but was soon steadied, and Splash led for half a mile, when the favourite moved up, and revelling .in the soft going,- entered the straight with a commanding lead. Waikaraka challenged, but • had no chance with the winner, who romped in. • Bourrasquo got a bad run, but finished very strongly. Teotane was disappointing. ■ACCEPTANCES..FOR SECOND DAT.
