PROVINCIAL CENTRES.
(From Our Special Correspondents-) ■ -* MASTERTON. The monthly meeting, of the Masterton County Council was held yesterday afternoon, Councillor W. J. Welch presiding. The council decided to direct a fresh consent to a loan of for bridgebuilding and formation oji Mangarai. Koad, to be prepared at once, and as soon as the' necessary formalities are completed to proceed' with the work. It was decided to adopt the- recommendation of the Finance Committee that the council join with the Masterton Borough Council in receiving, and, if necessary, entertaining his Excellency the Governor, who proposes making a final official visit to Masterton on the 20th instant, and in the event of such being arranged that Messrs. \V. and H. Beetham and Mr. Cockburn Hood be asked to be present and assist at, the function. The Treasury wrote advising the remittance of the following grants: Alfredton-Tonui Koad, £120 lis. lid.; Alfredton-Weber Road formation, .£100; Alfredton-Weber Koad metalling, .£740 4s. Mr. E. Eiddiford forwarded <£50 as bis contribution towards improving the Eiversdale Koad. . The Public Works Department wroto asking for the balances of authorities in the hands of the council Tip to March 31. The clerk reported having forwarded the information, lof which particulars ai;e given showing the name of the work, and the amount of liability, viz.: Homewood and Kaiwhata, £137 9s. 5d.; Upper Opaki, £53 lis. 2d.; Mangarai, £101 17s. lOd.; Blairlogie to Homewood, £62 lis.; Alfredton-Weber Koad, nil; Tanoru (Alfrcdton to Weber), £430; miscellaneous works and Ureti and Kiversdalo Koad, • £50. The superintendent of the State Guaranteed Advances wrote stating that the Fernridge waterworks loan of £500 had been held over pending the engineer's report, and . that the Mangarai loan of. £600 had been provisionally approved. It was decided to instruct the engineer to make an ostimate for renewing the bridge over the Black Creel: at Kaituna. It was also resolved that £170 be expended on the Eiversdale Road, ■ and £120 on the Ureti Koad. FEILDING.; Mr. Edward Goodbehere has acceded to a request- to contest the Mayoralty with Mayor Trewin and Councillor Harford. The following is the general committee for the ensuing year for the Fcilding Technical School-.—Messrs. W. J. B. Trewin (Mayor of Feilding), Fred Pirani (member, of the.board for the district), J. Bruce. (Kiwitca County Council), W. F. Bramwoll (District High School Committee), H. Tolley (Chamber of Commerce), A. E, Mayo (A. and P. Association), S. Andrews (Pohangina County Council), W. Eead (Oroua County Council), E. Goodbehere (Lytton Street School Committee). Messrs. J. M. E. Lochbead, D. M. Montgomery, J. Cobbe, and the fiev. G. Budd were re-elected as representatives, with Mr. Trewin, of the householders. Mr. Trewin succeeds Mr. Goodbehore as chairman. CARTERTON. A welcome social is to be tendered the Kov. C. H. Standage, Methodist minister,- and Mr. Crawford, home missionary, on Thursday evening. The borough council staff on Tuesday made a start with oxtending the drainage down Wakelin Street.. A social has been arranged to be held at Parkvale on Wednesday week. Tho Powelka scare has' not reached here yet, although when it was announced that ho' had been seen ..at Pahiatua, it was feared that he may have made for the Wairarapa. - Fortunately, he did not, but it will be a great, relief to all when he is captured. One young lady,.who is staying with.friends.in this, district, and' whose borne .is. at Palmerston, has delayedher return until the, escaped prisoner is caught.
