In the House of Commons, replying to a question by Mr. Douglas B. Hall (Unionist member for the Isle of "Wight), Mr. T. Jl'Kinnon Wood, Under-Secretary to tlie Foreign Office, stated that the Egyptian Government's intention' to abide by the Assembly's decision was reached after consultation with Sir Eldon Gorst (British Minister in Egypt)' and with his consent; but tho Imperial Government had in. nowise influenced the decision not to extend the concession. Mr. MTtinnon Wood added that the British Government's interest in the Suez Canal Company would terminate with the concession (which at present extends till 19C9). CANAL DUES, MAT BB BEDUCED THROUGH THE ASSEMBLY'S ACTION. London, April 1L The "Manchester Gnardian" says that shipping people are gratified at the Egyptian Assembly's rejection of the proposal for the extension of the Suez Canal concession, believing that the amount that would have had to be expended by the company on renewal work had the concession been granted will now be available for a decrease in the shipping charges.
