THACKER. • ;' Dr. ; Thacker etates .that the sum of .£SO a year, which he intends to give; annually for sculling at '• Akaroa,, will tio divided into threo. prizes, probably .£3O, £10, and ,£5, for the first, second, and third man respectively, and a gold' medal worth £b ss. will be given to the first man. The, race will ..be'fixed for the annual Akaroa.. Regatta, on Anniversary Day, December 16, but if it cannot take placo then it will be' rowed at the Lyttelton Regatta on New Year's day. The course will probably be about two miles and a quarter, and the race will probably be n, handicap with a limit. . :'
According to tho "Referee" . the news ■of the victory of Dick Arnst in the race at Akaroa against Geo. Whelch for the world's championship w.as expected here. Hardly any interest centred in the race on this side of the Tasman Sea, it being looked- upon: as almost a certainty, barring accidents, for the champion. The pluck, resolution, and rowing ability of little George Whelch . were recognised, but his judgment, or that of his backers, in making the match, was questioned.
