(Prom Oiir Succial Correspondents.) —» CARTERTON. Word was rcceiveil here on Monday that Mr. J• T. Constable, formerly ■licensee of the Gladstono Hotel, was found dead in his bed at To Kuiti on Sunday morning. Mr. Constable, who was also a former resident of Golden Bay, Nelson, only recently sold the hotel at Gladstone.

The. harvest festival of St. Mark's Church is to l>B held on Sunday ■ week. At the Salvation Army Barracks on Sunday special services were held in celebration of the '81st birthday of General Booth.. ■ A thunderstorm passed over the town on Sunday night, and Monday morning broke forth fine. Messrs. Campin and Hamer have completed the work of repainting the Kochabite Hall in Holloway Street.

Mr. Saunders's flax mill at Moutoahad to stop. last, week, owing to the breaking of the niain shaft. In the ordinary course of events, tho mill would only have lost one day. The railway officials would not, however, send the new shaft from Wellington until a full truck-load was going to Shannon, consequently the mill workers, - numbering about twenty men, had to knock off for three days. The annual meeting of parishioners for the election of a vestry was held at the Ven. Bede's Church, on Saturday nislit. the Eev. S. G. Compton presiding. The following church officers were elected:— Vicars' warden, Mr. W. H. Gunning; .people's warden, Mr. Knowles; vestry, Messrs. Esson, Batchelor, Harris, Linsell, Kxall, Johnson, and Kobinson. Mr. Esall was re-elected secretary.

A petition, signed by Messrs. the Shannon Land and Sainnilliog Company, E. G. Pilcber, L. Daroux, J. W. Astwood. and E. L. Yuille, was presented to the Horowhenua County Council on Saturday,

asking that a horse track should lie formed to the properties of the petitioners, for which they agreed to be specially rated.

OTAKI. The Rev. C. B. Jordan, 8.A., conducted his farewell services , at the Otaki Methodist Church yesterday, and also at To.Horo in the afternoon. There were good congregations at each service, and Mr. .Tordnn preached appropriate sermons on each occasion. Jlr. Jordan leaves Otaki during the present week, to take up his new circuit at Motueka. The Kev. V. Hands, of St. Kilda, Duncdin, who succeeds tho Rev. Jordan, arrives at Otaki on Thursday next. The annual general meeting of tho Otaki Golf Club was held on Saturday night, when there was a fair attendance of,members. Mr. W. 11. Simcox was reelected secretary, and Sir. E. C. Kirk captain. It was decided to open the season on Saturday next, and to hold a tournament on May 23 and U. Quito a number of Otaki visitors have been to Botorun and Auckland recently, among the number being Miss Katio Lynch, Mr. and Mrs. D'Ath, son., Messrs. T. M'Call, and V. and W. Taylor. All returned on Saturday, after having spent a most delightful time. At Saturday's of. the , Horowhenua County Council it was agreed that April 23 be fixed as. tho date upon which to consider tho heavy traffic by-laws, the estimates, and discuss in conference with the Levin Borough Council tho matter of sand-dunes. Attention has been repeatedly drawn to the deplorable state of the furniture at the Otaki court-house, which is unseemly in tho highest degree. Of 'the half-dozen chairs in use on Friday, only~J3ne was whole, tho others being minus portions of the scats or backs. Tho gates also are in a state of disrepair. '-■; Jog Moa, the Native recently capsized from it milk-cart, had a narrow escape from injury to his head on -Friday. Ho was catching a horso with a short tether rope attached, v.-hen the animal lashed out and struck tho Native on the head. .Luckily tho force of the kick was broken owing to Moa being in closo proximity to the hoof. . ■ ,
