AN "UNBINKABLE" SHIP. Nautical experts in Sydney expressed the utmost astonishment that a vessel constructed on the lines of the Pericles should have foundered. Every provision; had been made to ensure the vessel floating whatever mishap occurred to her, and sho was popularly believed to have been practically an unsuitable ship.
The PericleG was divided by eight watertight bulkheads into no fewer than nine watertight compartments, and she was constructed on the cellular double-bottom principle, the double bottom extending the whole length of the ship. It was believed by the designers, builders, and owners that these provisions would afford ample safety even in the event of a. collision of a veTy serious character. Notwithstanding these safeguards, however, tho Pericles sank in deep water within two hours and a half of the time eho struck the rock. ' MYSTERIOUS WRECKAGE. IS IT FBOM THE WARATAH? .. A report received from Mussel Bay, dated February. 28, states :-"Troojior Dan Marais has handed in the following report to the magistrate here i-r-Whilst on patrol duty, Jan Eensburg, a farmer, of Zandhoogte, near Great Brak I! iver, showed him some wrcckago washed up on tho beach on April 22. Concerning his find when interviewed Mamas said: I found 18 planks, two pillows, and two boxes. Three planks are 9ft. by 13in.. covered with red baize, others 6ft. to 7ft., painted whito and brown. Ono cover of apparently a cushion has a 'W in tho corner. Insido was a. blue pillow case, marked 'Captain's.' Three of the planks have tho following numbers: 352, 205, 326. One box is marked from Andrew Lusk and Co., and tho other Lunhani Bros." Tho Now Zealand Shipping Company expect the Otaki to arrive from waitara about April 22 or 25. She is to sail for London about April 27. It is reported from Ottawa (says "Fairplay" of March 4) that the Canadian Government intends to establish a regular subsidiEcd stoamship service between Canadian ports on tho Atlantic' and Australia., and, Mew ...Zealand.
Tho TTnion Company's steamer Arahura arrived at W-estport at 8 o'clock yesterday morning, and was to sail again at 11 o'clock for' Greymouth. ' Mr. Broughton; who has boon ashore on sick leave, joined the Pateena, as purser yesterday,, in place of Mr. Duff, who-hae-come ashore for orders.
