It ia stated that Colonel Allen Bell, commanding the Second Regiment of the Auckland Mounted Sides, lias been instructed by the Defence Department to procoed to England to undergo a six months' course of training, in military duties. A sale of old pictures collected by the late Mr Erie Drax, of Wye, Kent, realised ,£12,912. A panel by Rubens fetched 880 guineas and a rocky river scene by Ruysdaol 1200 gnintas. A bargain was eecured by the purchasers of "a woody landscape with sportsman and dog, for which they paid 100 guineas. After tt layer of dirt had been removed the signatnro and date of "J.
