PORT CHARGES

By-laws .to; give effect to' the■ increases in ,the port dharges, as -decided upon by the Wellington Harbour Board at its last, monthly meeting, were passed at a epecial meeting yesterday afternoon, ■ with two alterations. '. .1 , .. ■■-,!'■' "The charge'for storage of wool,.which' has. hitherto been 3d. per week- per bale all'the year round, was to be raised, according U> the-new schedule, toi 6d. per bale during the months of December, January, and February, and to remain at. ; 3d. during.' the ■ [rest' of • tho year. Yesterday, however,: the board decided on the motion of the chairman E. Fletcher) to make the charge during the three months named Id. instead of 6d.

.Mr. Fletcher explained that it had been represented-to him that a charge of 6d; would press unduly upon those concerned. The object of the increase was accommodation rather than revenne, but ; it appeared that those 'who were handling wool, were not in a' position to' help themselves in the matter of storage to any great extent.: The'ships paid tie-greater part of'.the charges on ..these products...... 'The -r- amendment was. .unanimously agreed to, .and.it was further' resolved: to make no' change in- the ■ charges'hitherto Jevied for the storage of hemp and tow.The other -items in the new schedule were .confirmed ' wil'hont discussion. ;,;::;.;■ ;
