MESSAGE TO INSPECTOR ELLISON.
A telephone message was received last night by Inspector Ellison from Sub-Inspector O'Donovan, of Palmerston North, stating that yesterday evening the police had received an urgent oall to a house sitnated about, a quarter of a mik from the police station, at which place it was stated Powelka was supposed.to be. ■. A number of police, officers were dispatched to the house, in charge of Sergeant Magnire, who had instructions to surround the place. • ■. A* <he were approaching tie
house, someone fired on them, and Ser-' geant Maguire- was shot in the, abdomen. No one saw the person who fired the shot, arid. it is not known definitely whether it was fired by Powelka or not. The extent of the injuries to Sergeant Maguire are not known, bnt he was woundod sufficiently severely to render his immediate removal to the hospital necessary. At latest advice the police had surrounded the house. Sergeant Maguire is well known in Wellington, having been stationed in this city for a great many years. For some years he was chief clerk in the district office at the Lambton Quay Police Station, and he was only transferred from Wellington to Palmereton on Friday last.
