WELLINGTON ART CLUB.
. Wellington Art Club, it is contended, is a misnomer. The new club, which looks like achieving something where there is at, present a void, has been formed to bring about a closer association between people^—ladies and gentlemen—who'.'are. interested not alone in art,, but in the' arts—music,, painting, the drama, ahd literature. :
Above, and before all, it will be. a social club, where sociability will he enhanced by a free interchange of ideas on subjects of mutual interest, which must be educative and broadening. One of the attractions of the club later 'on is to be the library, where books, magazines, and illustrated journals, having particular reference to one or other form of art may be consulted—publications which, at present ihave a necessarily restricted circulation in this part of the world. It is hoped to include in the library, the. complete works of such dramatists as Ibsen, Shaw, Barker, Galsworthy, Barric, Wilde, Fitch, Rostand, Maeterlinck/ and Bjornson, as representing the modern school, and a complete range of the classical writers. The pick of art and: literary, magazines will.be secured, as a supplement to more permanent', works on art with which the shelves will in time be stocked. . - - . .
The club is. at present negotiating for premises in a central , situation, and from a copy of-the plan of the same submitted to members, .these should prove very convenient and comfortable. There will be a reading-room and library, smoking-room for gentlemen, a lounge room for both sdxes (where cigarettes only may lie smoked), and other conveniences that are calculated to make the rooms acceptable to members. , Tho idea of an Art Club, is not by any means a new one, though a novelty to Wellington. Most of the larger cities of the world boast such clubs, and they are a. valuable means of improving the standard of art and artistic thought, and cultivating the artistic sense. An appeal is now being made to a section of the community to whom it is thought the idea will appeal, and it is confidently hoped that this winter will seo the new club' firmly established.
