LEGER STAKES. ; \; INGODA WINS IN RECORD TIME. :It. was again, beautiful weather on Saturday for the.second' and concluding day of the Wellington Racing Club's .aritunin meeting, and there was a very "" large attendance'at Trentham, the visitors including his Excellency the Governor (Lord-Plunket), the Prime Minister (Sir J. G. Ward), and the president .of the New. Zealand Racing Conference ■'. (Sir Geo. Clifford). Only two .scratchings were recorded in the seven handicap events decided during the afternoon, and the fields were large enough to warrant first and second : dividends being paid in all these events. In the St. liejger there., were only four starters, but a capital contest resulted, and the , Excellent condition of the racing track •was again, demonstrated when a now record for this event' was registered, the time being within ..a second of the iW. Zealand record for the ' distance. An interesting contest was also whV nessect in the decision of the Autumn' Handicap, but the-best' race of the meeting was the concluding event, in wliich'the whole, of the ten candidates swept round the home bend in a line. Backers were not'so correct in summing nf) the form as on the first day, for not a single first favourite prevailed on Sa<>nrday. : ■' . ■' ' ■■; : .-■ ■■■■■' •-» .

The last-named had the field beaten 100 yards ° from the post, and he won nicely by a length. Time, lmin. 16 3-ssec. -• NOTES ON THE RACING. ' Longner was made a solid favourite for the Second Hardies, with Hydrant next iri. demand. Gold Bird carried a little, more money than Hydraut on the totalisator, but with the- bookmakers he was not as. well backed. Chase Mab was the outsider of the field.. In the race, Gold Bird played with his field for a mile, and then went from last to first in a furlong,' and won pulling up in very .fast' time. Had, he been let run along, he would probably have distanced the field, which included two exchampions in Exmoor and Hydrant. The latter still has plenty of pace, but he does not jump as well as he used to do. Longner is capable of a good deal of improvement yet.
■With Sharpshooter (who beat Truganini on , the first day) not included among the starters, the Hutt Handicap ought to have looked a good bet for Truganim, but A. Oliver's mount, Ma-, taari, was the actual favourite, with Triiganini and Bqllin next ill demand. It was Truganini's day, and she won very easily. She has always performed well a-t Trentliam, but this was her first win on the course, and it was the signal for a round of applause. Considering that the winner had 9st. 91b. in the saddle, the mile was run in'very good time. The start of this race was the worst one at the meeting, but it was probably no. fault of -Mr. O'Connor's, as Swimming Belt, Adria, ■and Hilarian, tho three that were, left, proved very troublesome at the barrier on both days of the meeting.
St. Felix, a first day's winner, was easily first favourite in the "Muritai Handicap, and Explosive and Idealism were next in demand. ■ Backers were very wido of the mark this time, for the winner proved to be San Lass, while Leahora, a rank outsider, was second. St. Felix Jed for over five furlongs, but lie was unable to respond when challenged by Leahora and San Lass. Stanley Reid rode a nicely-judged race on tho winner, and just got.' her to the front in the last few strides. San Lass is almost a full-sister to the well-known performer, Tangimonna, as Waiau, the dam of. San -La-ss, is an. ,own sister to Waingongoro, dam of Tangimoana. The whole of the acceptors went to the post for the Autumn Handicap, Adria making. her second appearance during the afternoon. . The Stepuiak mare was again a cause of trouble at the barrier, and finally she was left. Eqiiitas was the public fancy, and Bridge and Lady Medallist had most supporters of the others. Tho favourite did not bear the same bright appearanco as when she won at the Cup meeting, and she must still bo feeling the effects of the two severe racos she had at Ellerslie last month. .She commenced well on Saturday, but after leading for nearly five furlongs she
closed up, and after a mile had been covered she was running last, and in tliis position she finished. The second favourite, Bridge, finished better, but he did not come along soon enough to return his supporters a dividend. He had been going too leisurely altogether in the first mile, and when he started to put in the right sort of work, Husbandman and Lady Medallist had a big break on him. The latter pair were in the leading division from the start, arid when Jialf tho journey was covered they singled themselves out from the field. There was nothing between them until fifty yards from tho. post, when Husbandman's superiority commenced to show, and gained him the verdict. The Treadmill horse had run a good race in the Thompson Handicap on the first day, and he now appears to be regaining his three-year-old form. Before he reaches that condition, however, he will have to improve a good deal more. The disappointing candidate on Saturday was Effort, who ran a long way below her true form.
The St. y Leger result was a mild surprise, to say the least of it. On her form in the C.J.C. Oaks and her secoud to Oiyoi in. the Duuediu Cup, the Stepniak 'mare was well entitled to support in Saturday's race, but tho impression seemed to prevail that she would not be seen at her best, and as Milan and Kilwinning are. both better known in these parts they shared favouritism. The race was probably the most interesting ever witnessed sin&s tho event was placed on the programme twelve years ago. . Milan set off to make the pace warm from, the start, and Kilwinning kept with him. The pair raced level till the home bend, with Ingoda galloping close behind. At tho last turn, Kilwinning, who had •been taking all the bends badly, ran wide, and gave. Ingoda an opening to get 'alongside Milan. A fine finish then ensued between the pair, but'lngoda stayed out the distance best, and won nicely by nearly a length. Marengo broke down badly during the race. Emblem was made a,/slightly better favourite than Tenterhook in the Pacific Handicap, but the favourite, after showing up for half a mile, was beaten out.of a place. Tenterhook, won easily at the finish, and is evidently a highclass filly, for in addition to winning twice at , the present meeting she was also seen in a favourable light on the occasion of her previous visit to Treiitham. Prior to the start of the race, Complexity, a- three-year-old by Conqueror, bolted a mile before being pulled up. Another bolt occurred before the last race, when the Conqueror gelding Rongomai threw his rider, and galloped the, length of the straight. Perle d'Or was withdraw! from the Suburban Handicap, and North East, , Tumut, and Ballarat were the "favourGipsy Belle upset calculations by winning easily from Parula, - who acted as pacemaker for about hah 1, the journey. ' Gipsy Belle is quite a good performer on the Trentham course, but her previous, victories there had been gained in 5-furiong .races. She ought to have carried more money on Saturday, as Effort and Perle d'Or—the only candidates' that beat her on Wednesday— were not started in the Suburban Handicap": ' . .
In the concluding event,. Kina and Laius,,two Porirua candidates, carried most money,.and the latter won rather comfortably-at the finish; Laius has been backed:solidly on several previous occasions, but ho. had not won before Saturday. He was ridden by L. Traill, a light-weight attached to the Porirua stable.
