BOWLS.
NORTHERN BOWLING ASSOCIATION. The president, Colonel R. J. Collins, occupied the chair at a meeting of the Northern Bowling Association, held at tho Wellington Club's pavilion last evening. - ' Correspondence was read referring to a rather unpleasant incident which occurred at tho Victoria Club's pavilion during the recent tournament, when four bowlers, who had paid their ten shillings, had been refused refreshments, the man in charge informing tho parties that only players could be served.: They wrote asking for a refund of 10s. each. It was moved by Mr. Vcitch, and seconded by Mr, J. Brackenridgo,' that the money bo refunded. Mr. Hill: "I don't know whether we are quite right in doing this. I would propose that wo all put so much in to pay this amount." Mr. Veitch: "Oh, no, that would be insulting." Mr. Hill: "Such men want something of tho sort."
Mr. Veitch: "Wo're here to conciliate."
On being put, the motion was carried unanimously.
Mr. J. A. Nash, of Palmerston North, wrote wishing to know what now became of the champion banner and shield now that the open policy was adopted for all tournaments.. The rules stated that the banner went to the club securing the greatest.number of wins. )t was pointed out by Mr. Roberts and subsequently by Mr. Brunskill that the rule which governs the point had never been observed, and that a3 tournaments were now played in sections it was. quite possible now for a team to play and even win more games than any other rinks and yet not be the winners. It was decided, on the motion of■ Mr. T. Bush, to thank Mr. Nash for'drawing attention to the matter, explaining how it .had become inoperative' (owing to sectional play), and that the association will revise the rule at a future meeting..
The newly-affiliated Featherston Club wrote regarding colours. The secretary was instructed to write to the Featherston Club informing them that their proposed colours had been previously selected by the Johnsonville Club.
A letter was received from the Auckland Bowling Club nominating Mr. Elliott for the position, of vice-president of the association.. This was written, in reply to a request from the Northern Association, but on the reply being received it was pointed out how unfair it was to other clubs in. Auckland that they had not been ablo to nominate anyone for the position. / It was suggested that the instruction,to the secretary, was to. write to ,the-. Auckland clubs, not the Auckland.Club, and the confusion had arisen during the change of secretary. It was decided to rectify this mistake by writing to the Auckland Club, asking the secretary to convene a meeting of all other clubs affiliated to the association, which meeting: should nominate a person for the office. The acting-secretary (Mr. H. F. Allen) reported that the sum of £32 4s. had been received towards the presentation to be made .by affiliated clubs to the late secretary, Mr. J. H. Mentiplay. It was decided that the presentation tako place'in Wellington.
Regarding the appointment of secretary, the chairman announced that tho sub-committee set up to go into the matter had not reported,-' and nothing could, be done in the matter at the meeting.. It was pointed-out by Mr. J. J. Roberts (a:■ member of the subcommittee) that ..the .committee'' could not proceed until) the : association decided whether tho office- be an honorary one or a salaried post. It was proposed and seconded that the sub-committee bo empowered to invite applications for an honorary or a paid secretary, the committee to report within a month. Mr. Roberts proposed that a committee consisting of the chairman, Messrs. Dixon, Brunskill, Bush, Barry, and the mover be set up. to revise the rules, and report any recommendations they may have, to make at a future meeting.
Mr. Roberts raised the ,bowl-testing bogie, but was told that the matter could be gone into when the sub-com-mittee went into the revision of rules.
