(By lelcEiaDta.—Press Association.! ■:—:—*-—:— . LOST TRAM TICKET. AN INTERESTING CASE. Auckland, April 7; Proceedings were taken at the Police Court to-day by ihe Tramway Company against T. Wake on a charge of riding on a tramcar from Onehunga to Auckland on December. 31 • last without paying his fare. The facts of the case were admitted by both parties. . Defendant had bought a return ticket to Onehunga and lost it. When he got on the car for the return trip to Auckland the conductor demanded a fare. This defendant' refused to pay, saying he had bought a return ticket and lost it. Proceedings wero accordingly taken. There was no suggestion of any fraud on the part of defendant. Jlr. Richmond, for the defence, raised a point or law as to whether the company had a right'to .sue,' seeing- that'they had not- complied with Clause 31 of the Tramways Act, which states that a list of tho tolls or charges should be hung up in a conspicuous place inside the tramcars. . The magistrate held that conn--se» b. point did not relieve defendant from the obligation'to pay his fare. There was no question of fraud involved, so a nominal penalty of Ba. was inflicted, with costs £2 16s "-

EDUCATION GRANTS. . Fellding, April 8. A. large and representative meeting of delegates of the school committees of the district held here to-day formed « branch of the School Committees' Association for : tho district. It /was decided to take steps to enter a united protest against the action of the Education Department in reducing, the grant to education, hoards and in withdrawing the. capitation grant' to school tees. ,•'••.'
ENGINEERS' DEMANDS. Napier, April 8. A meeting of employers interested hi the new demands filed by the Wellington branch of the Amalgamated Society, of Engineers was held to-day, when it was resolved to protest against ho meeting of .the Conciliation Council being held in Napier. Unless a sitting is arranged to oe held in Napier, Hawke's Bay employers will not appear before the council, nor will they agree bound by any agreement come to at the Wellington sitting, but will refer the dispute to the Arbitration Court sa far as Hawke's Bay is concerned!.' A visit paid yesterday'to Tuahine lighthouse by'the chairman of the Harbour Board- and the District Engineer confirms the opinion that the position oi the tower is unsafe, and that it should, be removed immediately, as the whole point is liable to slip into the sea. NAPIER BREAKWATER. Walpawa, April 8. The Waipawa County Council has instructed its representative on the Napier Harbour Board to, oppose further expenditure on the breakwater uutil the election of a new board. LOSS OF AN ARM. • .'.. Auckland, April 8. The Arbitration Court dealt,with a claim by Lewis Hunter: to recover £280 15..4 d- from the Union Company, foi. loss of an arm while quartermaster on one of tho company's\steamers. Plaintiff was awarded £222 9s. 4d., less £190 '7s. 7d. paid into Court.. Y.M.C.A. Dunedin, April 8. . :The Y.M.C.A. intend tilling for tendors immediately for a new building.
