When.the Newcastle liner Cavinront, bound to America with 900 Russians and Armenians aboard, was off Beachy Head (ou the sputa coast of Sussex) it was discovered that tho coal bunkers were on fire. An explosion blew a hatch to pieces, injuring twenty-'persons. A panic followed. Many men attempted to rush the women's boats, and in the struggle a, woman's spine was broken. The British crew, however, using determined measures,, prevented a disaster. The sailors knocked men down right and left. Four of the passengers jumped overboard, but. were rescued. Finally, all those on board were transferred to other steamers, which carried them to safety. , Prince and Princess Louis, of Batten?berg, personally served food to tho famished emigrants on their landing at tho Dover pier.
