A very enjoyable social evening was spent by a gathering of railway employees at the Lambton Railway Reading Room on Wednesday night, when a presentation was made to Mr. J. A. Dimond, ■ who' has retired after 28 years' service. Mr. A. Cassie (Thorndon, Railway) presided, and there was a large attendance. The /toasts honoured included': "The King," "The Railways," "Railway Societies," "The Ladies," and "The Press." In proposing the toast of "The Guest,". Mr.. Martin Lee spoke of the high esteem Mr. Dimond- was held by the members of the service, and the travelling public. A targe number of those present had been associated with Mr. Dimond for a great number of years.. Mr. D. Skinner and others also spoke in high terms of Mr. Dimond's good qualities. After the toast had been musically honoured, Mr. Cassio presented Mr. Dimond with a purse of sovereigns and a very handsome gold medallion, suitably inscribed, as a token of esteem and friendship. Musical items were provided by Messrs. Cassie, Langmaid, Morgan, Skinner, Hodges, Murphy, Dunne, Brown, andi Fahy. Mr. W. Bradley presided at the piano.

Applications for bookmakers* licenses for the Wellington Racing Club's meeting, accompanied by the fee, must be lodged at. the office of the club before 4 p.m. to-day. Mr. D. T. Stuart, F.1.A.N.Z., has disposed of the goodwill of his connection as a public accountant and auditor to Messrs. Barr, Leary, and Williams, 158 Featherston Street. St. Jacob's oil as a remedy for rheumatism is recommended elsewhere. Tenders will be received at tho town clerk's office up to 4 p.m. on Thursday, April 21, 1910, tot the supply and delivery of transformers for the electric lighting department, and also for the sup--ply and' delivery of eleotric meters.
