FIRES.
(From our'. Special Correspondents.) ' Otakl, April 7. A fire broke out at about 11 o'clock last night on Riverbank Road, when a small cottage, owned by Mr. Timothy O'Rourke, and occupied .by Mr. R. Giles, manager of Mr. A. Loasby's boot business hero, was completely destroyed. Both Mr. and Mrs. Giles were in bed at the time of the outbreak. When he became aware that the place was on fire, Mr. Giles rushed to save his wife and child. The fire had secured, a good hold, and as Otaki can boast of no water mains or fire brigade tho building was left to the mercy of the flames. The heat was so fierce and the fire had such a strong hold that everything in the house was lost, the occupants es-, caping in their night attire. Mr. Giles also had some cash in the house, and this.'was destroyed. The insurance on the furniture was £150, while the house was only insured for £40, both in the State office. Clsborne, April 7. Fires last night destroyed a Chinese laundry owned by W. Sandlant, and insured for £250 in the State office, and £50 in the Standard; also' a dwelling at Makaraka, owned by Parker and occupied by Leroy. The latter building was insured for £195 in the National;
