TWO HOTELKEEPERS FINED

Mr. W. E. Haseiden, S.M., ga,ve his decisions yesterday morning on several charges of breaches of the licensing laws. Catherine M'Enroe, licensee of the Britannia Hotel, Willis Street, was fined ,£lO with costs for selling liquor on Sunday, March 13, to John M. Morris. Evidence was given at the hearing that two polico probationers, under the escort of n porter, went' to the hotel and were served with liquor in a bathroom. A ehargo of keeping the promises open for She sale of liquor on the same date was dismissed. 11l the same connection, Kate M Enroe, daughter of tho licensee, was charged with supplying beor oil Sunday, March 13, to a oerson not entitled to bo bo supplied.

J. appeared for both ; George Finnock,' licensee of the Commercial Hotel, was fined <£10, for supplying liquor on Sunday, March 13, to Daniel Anderson, who was not at the time n lodger in the hotel.; The evidence was that a sergeant of police and a constable entered the hotel, on the Sunday night and found about' a dozen men drinking in a loom adjoining the bar, which was lighted in the usual way. Charges against the samo defendant of keeping the premises open on Sunday for the sale of liquor and exposing liquor for sale on Sunday were dismissed. Mr. Herdman appeared for the defendant. .

A FEMALE BURGLAR. .Elizabeth. Ward, alias Gillies, was charged with breaking and entering the dwelling of-John Armstrong and stealing property to tho value of 255. Ellen Armstrong stated in evidence that she locked up her house on the morning of March 2, and went out, leaving the key hidden in the' garden. When 6he returned at noon, the place had been ransacked, and the articles named in the charge were missing. Corroborativo evidence was given, and the accused, who pleaded guilty, was committed to'the Supreme Court for sentence.

- MET ON . THE STAIRS. A man who.proved to be one Jesse O'Brien, alias .Tohn M'Carthy, was seen the' other day descending the stairs of the Princess Hotel, in Moleswortli Street, and carrying a bundle. The licensee, John Shortis, intercepted him with somo pointed inquiries, and as a result the police were sent for.. The - bundle was found to contain two coats, a suit, of clothes, and an overcoat, which : had. been last seen in one of the bedrooms. :

O'Brien pleaded guilty at the Court yesterday to a elnrge of stealing from the dwelling of John Shortis on.April 2, clothing valued at <£4. He was committed to the Supremo Court for sentence. Two first-offending inebriates were convicted and discharged, and others were fined 55., in default 24 hours.
