A. Shrubl), the English long-distance champion runner, has been beaten again in Canada. In a recent match at Toronto ho met the Canadian crack, A. Meadows, in. what .was to have been a race over ten nules, he twisted his ankle on a banked .bend (the;raise was run on : a rink) at miles, and although he persevered to the seventh mile, he had to-retire, leaving Meadows to finish alone. The latter's time for the full distance was 53min. 31sec. ■
I <f. p. Marsh, another long-distance runner hailing from the Old Countrv. has had Ins colours lowered in the -land of tho almighty dollar, Ho met the little French champion, H. S. Yves, in a 15 miles race which took lhr. 38min. 47sec. to accomplish. The slow • time is accounted for by. the fact of the race being run. in tlie open over a track inches deep 111, half-frozen snow slush; and the runners suffered severely from cold. Marsh looked a winner for two-thirds of the, journey, but St. Yves, refused to be left, and towards tho end Marsh, by. far the heavier man, was labouring in tlie mud. He, however, made a great finish, and was only .defeated by. a yard, after one of .the best finishes seen. . .
