Sub-Inspector , O'Donovan pointed out that the Licensing Act provided that in certain areas any person shall be liable to a lino up to £d(J for supplying liquor to a Maori•• for consumption off the premises. In tho present case, tho liquor was placed in. a raupo bush on {ho Foxton-Shannon Road, from which the Maoris afterwards secured it.,- Mr. H.R. Cooper, for ..the defence,. submitted ■ that tho liquor was not supplied, to the Natives on any 'premises, but on the road, arid therefore ■ thoro was, no breach of tho Act. This view was upheld by the Court, "aud tho caso was, dismissed. The adjourned monthly meeting - oftho High School' Board of Governors was held last inght, Mr. W.'H. Collingwood (chairman) .presiding. The rector, Mr. J. E. Vernon, reported that the roll number was now 1-86. One of tho scholars—Miss Bessie Pigott— who "had passed the Junior University Scholarship with credit, had boon awarded a senior national scholarship, worth £60 a''year, for three year's. It was decided to send a- letter of, congratulation to Miss Pigott, and also to compliment tho rector and staff on one of the scholars obtaining this dis-1 tinction. Tlid director, of the Technical School, Mr.F. D. Opio, reported that tho classes were in full swing, and tho weekly enrolments had reached the splendid' total. 'of , 700. ' Tho cooking class was now being conducted by Miss Mary Watson, and was working, satisfactorily. The attendance! and conduct of students generally were excellent. The board considered a scheme, propounded by Mr. AY. Rutherford, to further extend interest in connection with tho technical school by :grVingother bodies, such as tho Borough and Kairariga County Councils, the A. arid P. Association, Employers' Association, and Trades' Union, representation" on tho committee, bringing the number of the committee up to ten. 'The scheme covered rules for the working of tho school,' and' after a short discussion, it was unanimously adopted.

' ; At, a meeting held at Dawick's; Buffet' last night, a iiiew- hockey club, -to ( he known.as t1i0.."l > almcrston' Hockey Club,." was. formed, and tho following officers were- elected: —Patron, Mr. D. -Wo have had rather:'a surfeit of moving pictures lately,; but . notwithstanding this fact, there was a great audience to witness Messes. M'Mahon and' Carroll's last * night," when tlio picture play, "For. tho Term of His Natural Life," was depicted on tho. screen, and proved most interesting, and. only-tended-to: show what remarkable results can be attained. "The Kelly Gang" is another realistic picture play which novcr fails to draw. ,' The inquest on the remains of tho late James O'Brien, who was found dead yesterday morning, showed the cause of death to bo fatty, degeneration of the heart. Deceased had been in' indifferent health for over, twelve months. ■ ,

Councillor AV. Stubbs, who has just been.appointed secretary to tho Palmerston Hospital, left to-day for a month's sojourn at Rotorua before taking up his duties, which, in tho meantime, will bo conducted by the late secretary (Mr. W. Uutherfurd). Councillor Stubbs has been suffering with rheumatism in the .head.

Much sympathy is felt with Mr. andMrs* H. Waldegrave, two very old residents of Palmerston and the parents of Mrs.' Martin Moir, of Christchurch, who died at Wellington this morning. Mrs. ; Moir had only been married twelve months.

-.The friends of Miss Heni Park.and Miss Ellen Pigott, ■■ both Palmerston young ladies, are delighted at their having secured their B.A. degrees. Both are also ex-pupils of tho Palmerston High School. :.■-•-.•
