Hunger strikes are not new to the twentieth century. A correspondent of the "Spectator" has made an extract from Pepys' Diary, Ma.y 26, IGG9, which records that in 1C69 Sir Edward Bury Godfrey arrested Sir Alexander Fraizier, physician to the King, for debt. The King was much annoyed, and the bailiffs woro apprehended and whipped. Godfrey himself was sent to the Porter's lodge, and with the support of the Chief Justice lay there, saying:—"He will suffer in the causo for the people, and do refuse to receive almost any nutriment," After six days he was released. The Baker was "crusty"; his words wero "tart." I Ho was not in the mood for a Jest; Ho folt like an oaf and wanted to "loaf,"' For he had a bad cold on the chest. What!
