The.y considered that Mr,, oeamer rather favoured the capitalist- in some of his remarks, and the meeting was convened for the purpose of threshing the matter out. Mr. J. W. MTDwan was m the chair, and invited these people to state their views. Several speakers responded, and one pointed out tnat this particular sermon was'opposed to scripture, and argued that the reference to the rejection of fools in business was not nice. The - Eev. Mr. Searaer. in replying, stated that the address was to young men in particular, and he 'J 1 ™ neve . r t0 to o ' l, time > ana then later on in business they could never be termed fools or wasters, or be * ra ° n S those fired out. Mr. Searaer treated his opponents generously, and was accorded a .round of applauso, and a re* solution was carried: "That this meeting thank Hr. Seainer for his explanation, and compliment him 011. his action in calling the meeting." • E} n £ the hearing of a civil case at the Court yesterday, the plaintiff (a lady), in evidence, told the Bench she could not read without spectacles. -"Can anyone lend me a pair?" she asked pleasantly.. "Oh, here's a pair," said she, reaching over and' taking Mr. Cudby's, who good-naturedly lent them amidst 'laughter.
The total to date of tlio Potono Ambulance Wagon Fund, including a donation of .£lO from the Railway Department, and the takings from "Gala Day," *13 155., has reached the sum of .£lO5. Last night a very enjoyable social was beld at tho Methodist -"Hall, the occasion being the opening of the Wesley Guild. A larg& number were present. Rev. A. J. Seamer occupied the chair, and Bongs were rendered by Miss E. Blakeley, Mr. J. Chamberlain, and Mr. Carson. Games were indulged in, after which refreshments were handed round. At the Lower.Hutt Police Court yesterday, before Messrs. Chapman, Elliott, .and Cudby, J.P.'s, Prank Meyrick, who 'did not_ appear, was fined 10s., with Is. costs, for selling short weight bread. Walter Coqley, charged with obscenity, was convicted and fined 205., with costs 11s., with the option of threo days' imprisonment. In the following civil cases judgment was given for plaintiff :—H. V. Westbury v. J. C. Brewer, .Is. Gd., costs 55.; same v. John Slines, 155., costs ss. In the case -of E. E. Murphy v.. I'utna Jones, claim, for possession of a plough, or; its value, £i 10s., plaintiff was non-suited, with costs 21s. Mr Smith appeared, for plaintiff, and Mr. Ayson for defendant.
