Mr. Allen Magnire and his son, of Wellington, will travel by the same steamer. Mr. Mack Jost, who brought Holman. Hunfs famous picture "The Light of the EWorld" to New Zealand, is at present a visitor to Wellington.. . Colonel Porter and Mrs. Porter left for Gisbome by the'l'arawera last evening. It is understood that Mr. Peter iDowar, .of the wellrknown firm of distillers, who was recently in New Zealand, was a passenger by the Pericles when .she was wrecked off Capo Leeuwin last week. ■Mr. George Witty, M.P., who recently, underwent an operation for appendicitis, has so far recovered as to be ablo to return to his home.at Terapleton. He is. almost restored lo health, but will take no part in public affairs for two weeks, remaining at home in tho interval.— Press Association.

Constable Osborn, of Timaru, and Constable Snowy of the Christchurch District Office, have been appointed actingdetectives, and attached to the Christohnrch detective staff.' Acting-Detectives Ward and Gibson,, of Cluistcfiurch,: have been promoted to tho rank of detectives. -Mr. R. Tout, who has been on the Longheadi Estate (Canterbury), continuously/for tho past twenty-one years, andhas filled the important position of agricultural manager, left Longbeach, last week for the purpose of settling in Southland. Prior to his leaving Longbeach Mr. Tout was entertained by tho employees on the estate and presented with an illuminated address and a travelling bag. Mr. Tout received as a souvenir from Mr: J. Grigs a valuable gold watch and chain. Mr. Grigg also paid.Mr. Tout a further compliment by presenting him with the favourite horse which he (Mr. Tout) had for a considerable time been using on tho estate while discharging his duties' as agricultural manager. Mr, A. C. Philpott, of the Agricultural, Commercial ,and Tourist Department, has boen transferred, on promotion, to Napier, as district agent of tho Department. He leaves Wellington on Thursday next. . Mr. Jacques, who was until recently canning expert for the Agricultural Department, is now .living at Motueka, where he has established a canning factory of his own. Mr. Jacques is at present visiting Wellington. Tho police staff at Mount Cook Station yesterday felicitated Sergeant Maguire', of tho District Office, on his departure from Wellington to take up his new duties at Palmerston North. In presenting that officer with a handsome liqueurstand as a token of esteem from the members of tho Mount Cook staff, Sergeant Rutledgo referred in appreciative terms to the courtesy and camaraderie which had characterised his relations with tho Wellington police, and wished him every success in His new sphere. Sergeant Maguiro suitably responded.
