MAGISTRATE'S COURT
(Before Mr. W. R. Haselden, S.M.) . POLICE CASES. For having disobeyed tho commands of tho chief officer, a seaman named William James Shaw, belonging to tho steamer Cornwall, was fined two days' pay, arid on a further charge of using obscene language Was lined £5, iu default ono month's imprisonment. Tho case against William Mnlliuson of having assaulted William Jaincs was dismissed. A juvenile named Walter Win. Sprowell was remanded to April 28, on a charge of associating with a reputed prostitute. Joseph Gibbons, with six previous convictions for, intemperance, reappeared on . a similar. charge, and was sentenced to ono month's imprisonment with hard labour. On tho charge of a breach of a prohibition order, accused was convicted and discharged.,... Florence Prosser, alias Ruby Kirk, with previous convictions for insobriety, was sentenced to 14 days' hard labour. On charges of drunkenness, two first offenders' were convicted and discharged,' and three -similar delinquents wore mulcted in a penalty of 55., with the option of 24 hours' imprisonment.

' Stallard, hot?.lkeeper, of Reefton, for the recovery of i£Gl 155., being balance alleged to be, dueiqn a contract:price for installing an acetylene gas plant at defendant's hotel at Reefton. Evidence on behalf of the defendant had been taken at Reefton, the' defence being that the jilant was not sufficient: to "last without recharging for ' as long a period as represented, and it was alleged to have cost one hundred per cent, more than as represented. After hearing plaintiff's evidence,, his Worship reserved judgment.
