SWIMMING.
F. ROBERTS LOWERS A RECORD. The members of the Thorndon Club have just returned from- a highly Enjoyable tour to Hastings and Napior. The carnival held at Hastings lost Saturday was a great success, ideal weather prevailing. , ilessrs. F. Roberts, >A. W. Smith, T. H. M'Lean, and the polo team won events, while R. Hcaly received a gold medal for his effort in attempting to lower the 100 yds. record for Hawko's Bay.' After the carnival the team were entertained at the Piccadilly Cafe by the Pioneer Swimming Club, the Mayor presiding. The Mayor spoke of the educative valuo the visit had been in the interest of swimming, the manager, Mr. A. W. Smith, suitably responding on behalf of the visitors. On" Easter Monday evening the Napier Swimming Club held a sports meeting in honour of the visitors, but the weather was not favoufable. Some very keen competitions were witnessed. F. Roberts, in winning his heat from G. Seymour, the Napier "crack," succeeded in lowering the New Zealand record for the 100 yds. ,in the good time of Oisec, There was an outburst of cheering when the result was made .known. As it was certified to by the three of the Napier Centre's timekeepers, a standard certificate and badge will be applied for. C. Brice, R. Nelson, and -T. H. M'Lean were. the.other successful competitors. Tho Thorndon polo team suffered defeat at the hands of the Hawke's Bay champions. The winners played with excellent combination and their victory was thoroughly deserved. The • management' were indefatigable in their efforts to entertain tho visitors.
