NEW PRIMATE.

ARCHBISHOP OF SYDNEY ELECTED. By Teleerapn—Press Association-Oopyrirtl .. (Eec. March 31, 1L35 p.m.) Sydney, March 3L ' The election of the' Anglican Primaia of Australia resulted in the'selection of the Archbishop of. Sydney. Dr. Clarke (Archbishop of Melbourne) aid Dr. Donaldson (Archbishop of Brisbane). . wera also. nominated;,.;'. -.:'■■ ■.■■■[■ THE GENERAL SYNOD. ', The. above cablegram announces the result of-the second ballot. At the first ballot the Archbishops of Sydney and Brisbane gained the same number of votes, the electors being the Bishops of Australia and Tasmania. ■ The question of some alteration beinff made in .regard to the meeting-place. of the General Synod' has been agitating th» ininds of many Anglican churchmen. Since the General Synod was inaugurated in 1872 the meetings have been held /in. Sydney, because it • happened to bo the seat of tho Primacy. In conneotiou with the election of the Primate, it was felt that if this precedent were followed, should the Archbishop of Brisbane :be elected Primate, it would have a serious effect, on the ' attendance .at the' Synod, : which is the most important Anglican -sudnioo m eouarajuoo u,omqo ihg as it does the bishops and clerical and lay representatives of the , various dioceses throughout, the Commonwealth. The General.Synod meets every five years; and as the next assembly is. due to be held in October this year, the matter will probably be dealt with then, and is likely to'occasion considerable discussion. Referring to the matter, the "Church' Commonwealth" says:—"The most central geographical position should bo chosen, and this would point to Melbourne, more especially, when three, bishops of Western Australia are taken, into account. . . . Whoever is elected to the Primacy, the General Synod'ought, for the Church's sake, to be moved away from the dominating influence of Sydney a harrow and intolerant Protestantism." A suggestion that the Synod might meet in: each of the diocesan capitals in tunvhas the approval of a number of ■ church-.-men.
