A severe censure was administered by the magistrate (Mr. Kerr) at the Polios Court this morning to a man charged with being found drnnk, and with procuring liquor while prohibited. The mam confessed that the craving for drink completely overpowered him, and asked that he be allowed to leave the colony to get work in the Australian back-blocks, fir. Krr referred to the numerous recent convictions against the prisoner, and, stated that his conduct had been absolutely disgraceful. Ha appeared to have lost all traces of manhood.. and bis treatment of his family had been scandalous.'To enable him to avail himself of the only remaining chance of reformation,,the magistrate convicted the prisoner, and ■"' ordered him to come up for sentence when called upon. . ■ Thanks principally to the; progressive spirit shown by the president of the Cos* mopolitan Club (Mr. George .Gardener), the members of that institution will by September next be in possession of a handsome and imposing structure. The tender of Messrs. Hewetsonarid 'Woolstoj has been accepted for the additions and alterations to be made to the building, the price being JZ322& The new build-' ing will be a two-story one, the top floor being devoted, to a Mlliard-room 66ft x 44ft,, which will provide sufficient accommodation for six,'tables.., The ground floor .additions will;include a new committee room, card/rooms,_ chess and draughts rooms, mil a_ kitchen fitted with a circulating; hot and cold watei service. The attentions to the old building will be the enlargement of the present social hall, aajl provision for increasing the bar accommodation, by whioh arrangements will,,be made for supplying the'wants of. those desirons of obtaining temperance drinsV such as beef tea. hot coffee, ten, etc.; The completed building will have a frAtage to Campbell Place oflGGft. .*••'■'■ The roading/of the Rangitatan district is to be put ti hand very shortly.- It is expected that, thirty hands will be employed early in April. ■
