Johnston, M.L.C., Wellington, who has' been granted furlough from his regiment (tho North Staffordshire), in India, arrived- from Sydney by the Warrimoo yesterday accompanied, by. his wife. ' ■" Among the passengers to arrive, from Sydney yesterday by the-Warrimoo was Mr. Harvey L. Duncan, Deputy-Postinas-ter-General of Madras, India. Mr. Duncan (who is a cousin of Mr. George Wilson, of Wellington) is the son of the late Captain Duncan, who entered the service of the East India Company as a young man, and remained in India for the rest'of his life, dying at the advanced age of 92. The present visitor,, who was. born in India, is enjoying a year's furlough, and intends ■to spend about three months in New Zealand.'..' Mr. C. C. Sir William Jukes Steward was a passenger from the south by the Victoria yesterday. i Mr. George Stephenson, well known for his connection with theatrical management, who has acted for several years as auctioneer for the firm ■' of Wright, Stephenson and Co., Ltd., at Gore, has severed his connection with the firm in order to settle in Sydney. Mr. Charles Macmahon, the well-known | theatrical manager, returned to the Dominion by the Warrimoo from Sydney yesterday. ■ The Hon. T. Mackenzie visited Maungatua and Berwick yesterday. Dr. Martin returned from Martinborough last evening. ■-. The friends of Mr. George Johnston, of tho Wellington Woollen Company, will regret to hear that he passed away on Wednesday afternoon at his residence in Irigestve Street after a long and painful illness. He underwent a serious operation some mohths ago, and after a few weeks, gradually became weaker. Tho deceased leaves a wife and daughter, for whom much sympathy is felt. Mr. G. A. Troup returned from the south yesterday. Mr. i\ H. Chunibe'lain, who was tho first engineev to the Christchurch Tramway Board, returned by the Warrimoo to Wellington yesterday, after a trip to Amerioa, and went on to Christchurch last night. At the March land surveyors' examination fourteen candidates presented themr selves, of whom the following four completed their examinations:—Messrs. Robert Black, Wellington; Arthur Hastings Bridge, Christchurch; John Berry Cuthbert, Napier; and Henry .Godfrey, Port Levy. •__ _^
