FOOTBALL GROUNDS ALLOTTED; '■:' A meeting of the Petone Borough Council, ■ held last evening, was attended by the Mayor (Mr. J. W. MTUwan), Councillors Short; Harding, Soutbgate, List, Jones, Young, and Trueman. . The secretary of the .Wellington Eugby Union (Mr, W. G. Talbot) wrote' once more regarding' the allotment of football grounds. The union notified that it adhered to the previous offer of £7 10s. for each of the two grounds understood to be available.. .The letter concluded-.—"These grounds are not of the best. It; is doubtful whether we could play any senior matches unless the season proves drier than that of last' year, ■ and thie : figure is as much as we can afford' to pay." Application was made by the Petone Rugby Football Cluto 1 for the use of the grounds on the Recreation Reserve for the season. The secretary of the club, in .his letter, pointed out that, every Saturday, local Rugby footballers numbered, with emergencies,, about 90, and if the whole or the majority of these players were compelled to travel'every week,'it would seriously affect the position of the Club. ;:■;'. Cemetery Trustees, reported that the Hutt Borough Council had passed the following resolution, to be forwarded I to the Petone Council: "That this council do not agree to the proposal of the Petone Counoil to insert a clause to the effect that any of the parties to the proposed agreement may. withdraw from I their responsibilities in- connection 1 with the cemetery after the agreement is given to." The letter was merely received, the. Mayor remarking that if the Petone Council-.stood .firm, it would, mean that no agreement would be entered into. ' .."■■■ The town clerk reported that . the amount, of, outstanding rates was ,£64, <£21 of which was for. Native property. The council resolved to extend the time within which certain rates should be paid.: The secretary of the Wangauui School Committee, Mr. H. Newcombe, wrote thanking Petone residents for kindness to the Wanganui cadets while c-ampirig in the district on the occasion of Lord Kit.chener's Tecent' visit. . . Mr. W. L. Smith, secretary of the Hutt and Petone Friendly Societies' Council, wrote asking for the use of the Petone Recreation Ground for a.friendly societies' demonstration on Sunday, April 10. The request was granted. " The Untler-Secretary for Lands wrote, in reply to a letter from the council, that Section 121, Maun.earaki Settlement, had beon .permanently gazetted as a scenic reserve in 1907. Withotit a special Act of Parliament, thero was therefore no power to give effect to the council's request . that the. land should be vested, in the council for the purpose of a domain. . .-.-...'.
