'-: ;: ■ The financial statement for the month showed receipts of' -. 16s.- id.', as against '£U 13s. 6d. -hi; March of last year,.and. an expenditure of 7s. 2d., as against. J2619:185. 6d. .I'he credit balance'.for,; the' month .was £50 lSs."3d., compared.with £63i 10s. for March, 1909. P, lute .said the reappointment of. the whole board was a matter for gratification, and a recognition of. the good work; that, had been done by members..;, :,.,.- .; ';, ■■.■■.■•■■ . -. .Mr.'. La Trobe, Director: of the Technical School,, submitteda report; showing the ■. residential distribution o"f students attending :tho eohool, and.from this it : appeared - that. r the central- point was somewhere about the corner of Tory and Haining Streets. Taking the oity stu-dents-only;-the central'point was found to be somewhere "■"in; the -neighbourhood of the.Basin Reserve. It had not moved much since his. previous report on : the subject !6ome -time back. The opening up of -Island Bay and Miramar, however, : was drawing the. centre-- slightly southwards-all-the time. ■ ■ ' -. The director •■ was congratulated by members on the able manner in which he had- drawn .up the report. It was remarked'"that ■: the centre tfas- moving towardsvthe site which the board had selected for the new school, and members hoped that finality in this-matter would be reached before long. The report, was received, as : was ■ one - dealing with the proposed wool classes, which: appears elsewhere.: ■ ... ■: -. •
-.-■ A Toport from Mr. Graham, instructor in the carpentry classes, in answer to a number of questions, was also presented. *Rom this it appeared that no amateurs were attending these . classes, : with a view oi qualifying for. tho .trade. Most of .the..amateur carpenters were ;there to. learn to mako things for the home. Mr.-.Graham did not consider, that anything'.was to- be. gained .by separating trado students. from tho amateurs. A more specialised ,-conrso for trade students would, however, bo desirable • This Mr -. Trobo.. stated would ■ necessitate special teaching provision. He was satisfied that no distinctions were made to tho detriment of trade students, more than were involved in that almost inevitable tendency in ,an enthusiastic teaxsher to. help those who most heln themselves. Out of 51 students, 32 are in the trade,, 9 are boys who may enter the trade—being under 16 years of age—and 7 are amateurs, while 3 ore in kindred trades.In moving the adoption of the director's report, printed elsewhere, Mr.''Luke snid the.school.had done splendid work in tho past year, despite. tho disadvantages under which it had been labouring. Mr. Luko announced his intention of not standing for the chair for another year, and. on the motion of Sir. Ailkcn seconded by Mr. Luke,. Mr. ISallingor was elected chairman for the ensuing twelve months. . Tho meeting concluded with complimentary references to tho.work of M-. Luke, and congratulations to Mr,' Bal-
