Crusade.- . While riding in a = forest lie came xipou a lion, struggling in the folds of a huge serpent. He killed the serpent and let tho lion'go,upon which the thankful cr'eatur« - fawued upon him and refused to leave his side. Throughout tho Crusade tha lion followed his protector, and was perfectly harmless to the soldiers. ' But when tho time came for the Count's return by sea, the sailors refused to allow the faithful lion to com4 on board the. ship. Sadly the poor fellow stood on the shore : watching ■ the ship - which wns taking his-friend away, : till at last with a cry of grief: he flung : himself .into the wave, and swam after the fast vanishing ship, till his strength ■ failed, and he sank in tho; depths. .
