Marquis, manager for New Zealand of the Temperance and General Mutual Assurance, arrived frojn Christchurch yesterday, by .the Maori. Dr. and Mrs. Phillips were passengers by the Maori, which arrived from Lyttelton yesterday morning.

Farquharson, B.A. (Oxon.), M.Sc., F.G.S., the third New Zealand Rhodes scholar, is returning to the DoI minion by the Orient liner Ot'way, via Suez.. He is expected in Wellington this week. A pleasing little ceremony took place last weekj when representatives'of the Now Zealand Institute of Architects and the New Zealand Federated Builders' and Contractors' Association waited upon the Hon. C. M. Luke, and presented him with four handsome volumes and a bound copy of the shorthand writer's report of the proceedings of the conference recently held between representatives of tho two bodies. In making the presentation, Mr. Atkins expressed high appreciation of Mr. Luke's assistance as chairman of the conference. Mr. Luke suitably acknowledged the souvenirs. Mr. 0. S. Munro (who was manager of the New Zealand-Exhibition), now reaiding at Liverpool, was to have presented the Westport .District Welshmail's addreja to tfie-Hon,. Lloyd-George.

Sergeant Stagpoole, who is leaving Palmerston for Oamaru, has beon tendered various presentations. He lias received a Masonic presentation, and, on Saturday night, Mrs. Stagpoole was presented by the Mayor, on behalf of citizens, .with a purse of sovereigns as a testimony of the esteem in which her husband is held. The president of the Manawatu Rugby Union also handed her a travelling-rug as a memento of the sergeant's services to tho Eugby Union, of which ho'was a vice-president. The local justices of the peace make a presentation on Tuesday,—Press Association.

Mr. C. Eagar, of Wellington, left for Blenheim and the West Coast on Saturday as avant-conrier for the Hassan Conjuring and Vaudevillo Company.

Mr. F. E. Evenmark, of the staff of Messrs. J. and A. Wilson, contractors, has been presented by his fellow-em-ployees on the eve of his marriage with a handsome marble clock. The presentation took place at a social gathering, presided 3 over by Mr. J. Wilson. Songs, etc., were contributed by Messrs. Tinney, T. Wilson, Donaldson, Williams, Eintz, and B. Durner.

Mr. J. T. Healy, well known in the Wanganui and Westport districts, died at _ his residence,. Sydney Street, on Friday last. Deceased, who was only twenty-four years of age, was a son of the late Mr. Denis Healy.- The interment takes place at Karori to-day.

Mr. Harry Floyd, the veteran trainer of champion scuflersj has' left Wellington for Akaroa, to give Axnst the benefit of his_ services during the last'few days of his training for the match' with Whelob, which takes place on Saturday next. Barring accidents, Mr. Floyd thinks there is only one man in the race.'

Mr. T. W. Dineen, lately on the'electrical engineering staff of the Ross Goldfields, Ltd., who has accepted an appointment in the Malay Peninsula, is spending a few days in Wellington prior to his departure for the East.
