[From Our Social Correspondents Palmorston, March 24. The erection of the chib house on the Hokowhitu golf links has been started. The concrete foundations are complete and the framework is now in course of preparation. The caretaker's cottage has been removed some distance, and the club house is now being erected on this site. A large gathering of Plymouth Brethren is to be held at Askhurst during the Easter. holidays. "Provision is being made for about three hundred visitors. ■ ; A meeting of the Manawatu Cricket Association was held last night, Mr. C. H. Warden in the chair. The report submitted .by the hon. secretary, Mr. 0. Clelland, in connection with the recent match with the Australian team, showed that when ,the returns for the sale of tickets had been received, the guarantee will be just about met. It was decided to placo on record the. association's appreciation of the services rendered to cricket by Mr. S. Greer, particularly in connection with the Australian match, and also the confidence of the association in him as selector. It was decided to support the motion of the New Zealand Cricket council that no one in receipt of pay as'a cricketer shall bo eligible. to play .in Plunket Shield matches. A match between Komako and Ashhurst cricket teams will be played on the latter's ground on Saturday. The following team will represent Manawatu in the cricket match-with Pahiatua on the Palmerston sports ground on Saturday :—Goldspring, Cozne, Cobbe, Brennan, Roberts, Wakelin, Jounneaux, Bartlett, Cox, Pegden, and Mansford.
The annual meeting of the Palm'erston branch of the, Wellington Acclimatisation Society was held last night, the president, Mr. E. 0. Hurley, in the chair. The report and balance-sheet,' showing a credit of £3 lis. Id.; were adopted. It was decided to support the circulation of a petition to the Minister in favour of an open season this year, as hares and quail were so numerous that they were becoming a nuisance to farmers. The following officers were elected:—President, Mr. E. 0. Hurley; hon. secretary and treasurer, Mr. T. Stockwell; auditor, Mr. Percy Smith; committee, Messrs. G. M'Donald, J. Mortensen, R. V. Lloyd, L. Georgi,;F. Stockwell, P. Smith, J. Lissington, J Smith, W. Turner, and J. S. Lyons. A hearty vote of thanks was'accorded the hon. secretary, Mr. T. Stockwell.. The members of the local lodge of Good Templars will hold a picnic in Victoria Esplanade on.Easter Monday. The annual meeting of the Campbell Street Old Girls' Hookey Club was held Jaßt night, Miss E. Brown in the chair. The report stated that the past.year had been very successful. The follow" ihg officers were elected:—Captain, E. Brown; vice-captain, Mary Crump;, hon. secretary, F. Forsyth: patron; J?.' E. Watson; president, T. T, Kerslake; vice-presidents, T. Childs, A. Millar, J. S. Watchorn, Mesdames Freeman, Palmer, and Mellish. : The local lodge of Druids held a very successful dance last evening, the first of'the season. ' Messrs. M'Gregor Bros, have decided to close down their sawmill at Linton.,
