TREE-PLANTING IN MIRAMAR.

The borough engineer of Jliramar (Mr. R., E. Bennett) submitted a report last evening to his council on a scheme of tree-planting. ,'llie engineer said that the improvement of the present plantation «n Onelvmiga Road and the■'extension, of the plantation at Worser Bay were works which might be "readily undertaken, as' they involved no fencing. As a new plan- \ tation," the council might consider the Pass of .Branda, ■ which had a width of ■ two chains, and an average length of three chains. The engineer considered that it was particularly well, suited for planting with trees. The area was • 24 perches, and the length of fencing required was 10J chains. The number.of trees and shrubs required for the plantation, spaced from 7 to.B feet, apart, would be 100. The cost of planting was estimated, at ,£35. The. space between the main drain and the formation on Part Road could be planted with, good eit'ect. The estimated cost of fencing and planting was i£llo, the .number of trees and shrubs being 800. A proposal had been considered that the trees should be planted along the middle of the. side streets,■ such "as Tbhi Street and. .Rua Street. The cost of constructing a width of 16ft. on each side, of the reserve, and fencing the centre, would cost £12 a chain, however, and oh the 66ft. • streets ' the belt of trees would necessarily he thin. Torn Street would be available for .| tree-planting. If the council decided to i undertake'any. tree-planting this season itiwas important that the ground should be prepared at once.' • - | Mayor (Mr; C. J. Crawford), Coun- . cillors ;M'Lcod and Bowie were appointed to consider the engineer's proposals, and furnish a report as to the advisability of taking some.steps in the near future to lay out plantations. .
