REMARKS ON THE VANCOUVEB SERVICE. (By Telegraph*"-Press Association.) y Auckland, March 16. Sir James. Mills, managing director 01. the Union Steam Ship Co., arrived is Auckland by the P. and 0. lmer Mongolia from Sydney to-day. In tho eours< of an interview, Sir James said thew was nothing new to chronicle, beyond thi statement made by Mm in Sydney a week ago to the effect that the company had decided to replace the wrecked Waikart with a vessel' of tlie' Marama type, ant to have her running next summer. Ths company had also purchased the Cana dilui-Australian mail steamer Aorangi, and intended holding her as a reserv< steamer. . The New .Zealand Shipping Company, since the laying up of the Aorangi last January, has had no further connection with the Sydney-Vancouver service, ant this lino will in future bo carried on entirely by the Union . Company with it, own steamers. The Union Company wax; desirous of securing a contract with the Commonwealth Government which would enable them, to place the Vancouver service on a still better footing. .
Questioned in regard to the new service between Australia and. London via South America, connccting with the trans-Andine railway at Valparaiso Sir James declined to express any opinion on the subject, in view of the fact thai no news;of the proposition had reached him until His arrival in Auckland thii morning. Tfe question of distances aiui the possibilities of trade between Ati =>. tralia and New Zealand with Chila nccdod to be seriously gone into. (Sit James explained) before any definite opinion could be expressed.
