London, March 14. At Whiteley's great emporium there ■was a narrow escape from a serious calamity by fire. The closing of the iron doors had the effect of confining the firo to one department, and little damage was done. '

When the firo was discovered the customers on the premises and 4000 assistants were removed without confusion. 'One department was, destroyed. A dozen firemen were overcome . by smoke, and had to be taken to tho hospital.
