Tie beautiful weather prevailing 01 Saturday attracted a large number o spectators to the Petone Recreatioi Ground to witness the Petone Junio Club's annual sports gathering,- the pro gramme for which was carried out in ai excellent manner. Quite a number o entries were received from Wellington amongst these being' M'Kay, champioi pole-vaulter, who, in giving an exhibi tion of his skill, cleared the stick a; lOftr. 6in. Woodger, through indisposi tion, was unable to compete. AH event: were well contested, and some oxcitin; finishes were seen. J. D. Fraser, Pe tone, won the cup with most points foi the day, viz., 10. HERETAUNGA BOATING CLUB. : The yacht race which was held on Satlrday, under the auspices.of the Hereaunga Boating Club,; was sailed for the ioihmo'dore's trophy. Although the wind ras light: and variable, the event was ivatched from the. shore with- much iri;erest., The.cour6e was from the Petone Wlarfto Soames Island, thence to Rocky Point buoy, and back to the wharf. The Spray, from scratch, proved the- winner if the trophy, covering the distance in ihr. Bmin. 26sec; Runa, scr.', 4ir. 13min. SERVICES. "The children's day" was very fittingly selebrated at the Wesley Church, Petone, rosfcerday,' the occasion being the twentyiixth anniversary of the Sunday School. The church was very tastefully decorated ivith lycopodium, interwoven- with numberless briar berries, and the effect was rery pretty indeed. Services were held it 11. a.m., and at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m., the'preacher at all three being the Rev. Bowden Harris, late of Queensland. He lelivered • addresses suitable to the occasion. The children, who had, been rained by Mr. Ackroyd,. rendered special lumbers in a manner creditable to the lonductor. The superintendent of the Sunday School isMr. W. H. Melhuish, and the secretary, Mr. J. M'Dougall. The special singing will be repeated next Suniay, and the. preachers for the day are to be Revs. A. J. Seamer. and W. J. Williams. '. The annual report, which shows 1 year of progress,, will be read at the mniversary "social,"-which is to be held m March-' 24. FIRE BRIGADE EVENTS. Councillor Baldwin and Dr. Anson, of Lower, Hutt, have been approached with t view to their contesting the Hutt Mayoralty. Both, however, have 1 declined to come out as candidates. Mr. W. 11. Russell has announced his intention to stand. The sub-committee set up to go into the question of ; procuring an ambulance wagon for Petone yesterday inspected the St. John ambulance wagon. .Tho committee was accompanied by Mr. Cook, the borough engineer, and the decision arrived at was that there was no need to pro cure the wagon outside the- Dominion.
