ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
KILLED ON S.S. WIiIMERA. i .. . . IBy Teleeraph.-Prese Association.! . . Christchurch, Starch 12. A fatality occurred - on board the Hud-dart-PaTker Company's s.s. Wimmera at 3.10 p.m. to-day, whereby Alexander Worries, who was acting at hatchma'n at No. 1 hatch, was killed. At the time of the fatality the. steamer was taking in wheat, which was. being loaded in the 'tween decks. Morriss was standing at the side of the hatch, with his foot resting on the combings, when a sling o? sacks of wheat swinging inboard touched hini on the kg, and he overbalanced. He was thrown heavily into. the hold,, and in his fall struck the combings of the 'tween decks. The unfortunate man was raised to. th« upper deck at once, but died as soon'as he reached the wharf. Deceased, ■ wlio was an old resident of Lyttoliton, leaves a widow, three sans, and four daughters. SHOT WITH A PEA-EIFLE. '. Dunedin, March 12. George Hatcher, a carpenter, whilst walking from Abbotsford Station last night, was struck down by a pea-riflo bullet that went clean through the calf of his leg. Hβ did not see. who fired the ebot. His condition is not serious.
