| THE CHAMPJON. RIFLEMAN GEORGE HALLIDAY. Rifleman George Halliday, this years' champion, has been a member of the Karori Rifle Club for the last ten years, but'only during the last five years has he been a very prominent shot. He has been shooting remarkably well this year. He finished second in the Wellington Rifle Championship, and won the Palmerston Aggregate two years ago. Ho was well up in the Eing s 50 at last year's meeting, and on the form shown then was selected as a member of the New Zealand representative team which visited Australia, last spring. He is a past champion rifle shot of his club, having won the club championship two years running. This year he is second in the running for club championship honours. Halliday is recognised generally as ono of tho best toams' shots in New Zealand. His finest "shoot" > was an aggregate of 100 points, mode jn tho Teams Championship Match at tho 1909 Trentham meeting. Ho is about 32 years of age, and a smoker.
The new regulations which will guide the territorial soldier might include one regarding the teaching of tho saluto; or ordering its abolition. At tho Trentham prize-giving yesterday the weirdest collection of salutes seen for some time wero on view. One soldier, in receiving his trophy, took his headgear off, and rubbed the side of his head with his other hand; soveral simply took their headgear off; ono in uniform, and a civilian hat, had tho only oxcuso for taking it off; a soldier with threo war ribbons made a grotosquo effort with tho wrong hand —and so on. If soldiers are not taught to saluto properly, why include the salute 03 gart.af a recruit's, training?
