Trophy ' for teams representing Now South Wales and New Zealand, eight men each.-. The teams, were drawn up at about 1200 yards from the target trench, and advanced' at ; the trail at three paces interval by the command. of' the umpire. On the appearance of the target' the teams were .required to. halt and, in any military position, fire as many rounds as they : chose. On the disappearance of the targets the men had.to unload, nnd the teams then advanced with trailed arms until the (argnts appeared again, when they halted'iand fired as above. A third, advance was made • under the same, conditiqns, ■ and a fourth advance at the double. Subsequently the ' teams were marched to a Dank and fronted, by the umpire, and', when ,tbe target rose again, .they fired their final volley. Tho target then appeared five times at irregular and unknown'intervals* at the discretion of the umpire. Each hit scored one point. Tho men selected to represent New Zealand and Australia were as follow:— New Zealand—Captain TV. S. King (Linwood), Rifleman' H. Marshall (Karon), W.' N T . Masefield (Sounds), Lieutenant Sandfo'rd (Chrtstchurch), Sergeant James (Napier), Sergeant Frank (Nelson), Corporal . lvells (Palmc'rsioii North), and Gunner Chinn; (Lyttelton). Now South Walc's.-O. E. Boyd, W. H. Porritt, W. H. Cutler, J. Bilton, P.'Harrison, J. A. ICefford, J. J. Harbison, and M. 11. Tessimond.. , -. Tho ' results were:—New Zealand . 7 points; New South Wales 4 points. , In war, according to military statisticians, about one million shots arc fired for the death of each man; and as 300,000 round's of. .303 will, have been iired before the camp breaks up, it seems that only the equivalent-of-'a little better than one-third of a man will be slaiu at the finish. ' 'In conversation with numerous executive 'officers yesterday it was elicited that never, before have the arrangements for their personal comfort been so carefully carried out. The staff and camp servants have been, generally praised, and particular reference has been made to the very noticeable smartness of -'the cooks arid table-waiters. •■■■■:
THE "C.A.C." MATCH. ■ Field-firing competition. Competing teams were formed up at 800 yds. from the targets, and told off to scpnrato targets. Each team was .< extended at intervals of two paces facing its target, and lay down with rifles unloaded. The officer in command, having given tho signal to the officer in charge nf the trenches, the targets appeared for 15 seconds, during which interval each man of tho team had to fire one shot at.the sectional target— r. figure representing four men. The targets disappeared, and the whole line, with rifles at the "trail," advanced in quick' time. The targets reappeared nine times more, and, upon each reappearance, the competing teams were rennired to halt and fire one. shot. Upon their arrival at .a point about 500 yds. from the targets the teams retired, continuing to fire during, the retirement. The result was a tier.Petone Rifle Club, 15 points; Karori Rifle Club, 15 points; Victoria Rifles, 15 points. The tie will be decided this morning.
pity that the fir© effect at long ranges is not noted. It is probable that no butlet "got on" ai 1000 yards, or at any o£ the intermediate long ranges, and the probability is that the eleven shots that found tho "men" were got on. at the range nearest to them. Every man is given forty rounds, and as it is to the advantage of his team to get off as many as possible—there is rapid firing. RICOCHETS. Some officers have mentioned the lack of medical attendance. at Trentham. In a camp whero 700 men are living, under new conditions, and on strange food and water, it necessarily follows there are major and' minor sicknesses. On. the whole, however, the health of the men has been good. In such cages' as occurred Dr. Macknight, who.is on ihe ground only as a competitor, has acted, but it is held that after the experiences of former years a medical officer should be detailed for duty and should reside
