THE SHEFFIELD CHOIR. : (Prom Our Special Correspondent) , Palmerston North, March 5. There was an excellent attendance this afternoon at the meeting convened by Mr. M. Cohen to meet Mr. Gorlitz, who is.making : arrangements for a visit of Dr. Harris's famous Sheffield choir next year The Mayor- (Mr. J: A. Nash) presided, and- he and Messrs. Cohen and Gorlits addressed .the meeting. . All present formed themselves, into a committee to. promote arrangements '• in connection with tho visit, the Mayor being appointed chairman. It was decided to form subcommittees in other centres, such as I'eliding, Wanganui, Napier, eta, Mr. Gorlitz explaining that excursion trains would; be arranged for from these places. It is-proposed to hold the concert in the Agricultural Hall-on the show grounds, , as that; building ; has seating accommodation for about fliree thousand people. \ Mr. Temple White, of Feilding, was among those present and undertook to form a sub-committee , in-that town. ■ The foundation stone of the new fire brigade station will he laid on March-16." The Palmerston Bowling Club will hold its usual tournament at Easter, the foil lowing clubs having been invited to take part: — Masterton, Cartcrton, Napier, Greenmeadows, Hastings, Dannovirke, Pahiatua, Wanganui, St. John's, Marton, ■ Feilding, Terrace End, Shannon, Levin, Otaki, Newtown, Wellington, Thorndon, Victoria, and Te Hiwi. The rink matches will be played oil. Friday and part of Saturday, , the pairs games being begun, on Saturday and finished on Monday. . A number of enthusiastic bowlers in Foxton havo formed themselves into a company. They have secured a piece of ground in Avenue Eoad, and will proceed at once with the laying down of a green. ■. A man named Ryan was fined 40s. costs at the Police Court this morning for being on licensed premises whilst a prohibition order was in force against him. He was also fined 10s. for travelling on a train without having a ticket. The. Mastorton rink of -bowlers, who had proposed to visit Palniorston to-day" to play for the Dixon challenge cup were unable to make the;journey, and have withdrawn their challenge. A Marton rink has now'challenged the Palmerston holders of tho trophy. ■ Tho West Coast Shipping Company has let a contract for tho erection of a wharf at Foxton.

Much regret is expressed at the removal of Sergt. Stagpoole from Palmerston, as ho has hpcome known as a zealous and painstaking officer during his eight years residence here. The sergeant received notice to-day from headquarters that he is to be transferred to Oamaru. The annual picnic in connection with tho Stoney Creek Public School was held in Messrs. Sly's paddock yesterday and proved . very successful and enjoyable. ■ Sports and games of many descriptions were arranged, and abundance of refreshments was provided by (he parents. Tho clay's proceedings wore wound up with a dance in the hall in the evening. ' Tlio Hall Committee at Kairanga have decided to make various improvements to tho hall, both.inside and outside.
