Weber, a popular satirist, married in London recently the widow of Major von Schoenebeck, who -was shot by Captain von Goeben at the military barracks at Allenstein, Prussia, in 1907. CaDtain von Goeben confessed that he committed the crime in a frenzy of love for Madame von Schoenebeck, and committed suicide. Madamo von Schoenebeck was arrested as an accomplice, but the trial was not proceeded with owing to differences of opinion among tho medical experts as to her mental condition. , She has now boon arrested in. Berlin for inciting to and participating in thn innrder. The trial' is arousing profound interest in Gormany. THE CRIME. ■ Major von Schoenebeck was,found shot in his bedroom at Allenstein, Eastern Prussia, on December 24, 1907. A fullyloaded revolver was found by his .side, disposing of the first idea that the major had committed suicide. On December 28, Captain von Goeben was arrested, and charged with, the murder. Von Goeben fought under de Wet in the Boer War*, and was a brilliant and distinguished officer of the German Army. Three days after his arrest, he confessed his crime, and Fran von Schoenebeck was 'then arrested on suspicion 'of having, instigatedthe murder of her husband. ,It appearsthat on Christmas Eve von Goeben was present at the Christmas festivities in von Schoepebeck's residence, and just befor'o midnight he said good night to the major. Instead of departing, however, he hid in Frau von,. Schoenebeck's room. Later in the night he entered his hosfs room and killed "him. He stated that he committed the crime in a state of love frenzy. After his arrest he was kept under medical supervision, but the doctors found that he was mentally sound. He committed suicide in prison on March 3, 1908, by severins his 'jugular vein. Frau von Schoenebeck was. released as being hopelessly insane.
