The "Otago Daily Times," commenting on the fact, says:—"The record which is involved in "this circumstance' is of an altogether exceptional occurrence. "Writing subject to correction we believe there is not another judge in the British Empire of whom it can be said that he has had a judicial career equal m duration to that of the distinguished lawyer and ripe scholar who is the doyen of'tho Bench in New Zealand." Mr. P. Hally, Conciliation Commissioner for the Wellington and West Coast industrial district, arrived from the north on Friday and left Christchurch for the West Coast on Saturday to deal with a dispute. ■ . ■ '"
Dr. Blackniore, who has been appointed resident medical officer of the North Canterbury Consumptive Sanatorium at Cashmere, arrived in Christchurch on Thursday. •.■-■■■ ■ . :
The Rev. C. J. Eae, 8.A., of Ballarat, has been appointed Anglican vicar of the Amuri district, which is in. the Nelson diocese. He will arrive in May.
The Hon. T. Mackenzie attended the Cheviot show on Friday and returned to Christchurch in the evening. On Sahrrday morning he went to Haimer Springs. Ho returns to-day, and he will leave for Wellington by this- evening's ferry steamer.
Dr. Stanley Brown, late of Wellington Hospital, is at present staying at his father's residence in Tenruka. After a trip to the Sounds he will go Home on the Devon to continue his medical studies in England. ' . -.- .
Mr. A. W. Hogg,, ILP., who has been spending a holiday in Central Otago and at the Cold Lakes, returned to Christchurch on Thursday. As a result of his trip his health has been thoroughly reestablished. Mr. Hogg will remain in Christchuich for a few days, in order to take part in a conference of members of the House of in connection with the land question.
Mr. Alexander Smith, formerly licensee of the Cricketers' Arms Hotel, at the corner of .Vivian and Tory Streets, died at-his residence, Hawker Street, yesterday .moniing. The late : Mr. Smith waa born in Scotland and came to New Zea-. land when quite a lad. He joined the Ist. Division of the New Zealand Aimed Constabulary and sa-w a considerable amount of active service during the Maori war. He was in several engagements fol-' lowing the Poverty Bay massacre, and took part in the siege.of Ngatapa which lasted ten days. Later he was with his regiment in ' the hunt after the famous Titokowarau, from Wangahui to Patea, and on to Waitara. through bush country. The constabulary were then ordered ±o the Bay of Plenty to follow up Tβ Ivooti. Deceased was a prominent member of'the Licensed Victuallers' Association, and a well-known sport. He was at one time owner, of. the racehorses Australasia and. Effort, and was also vicepresident of the 'Poneke Football Club. The funeral takes place to-day..

Dr. J. M. Meh'affey, who, has', been, absent in England . for,, about four years studying the profession of. medicine, returned to Invercargill last week. Dur-' ing Ms sojourn in London Dr. Mehaffey won repute, in Rugby football circles as a member of Hospital team,, and on several occasions was eelected for more important combinations, being known aa one of the finest forwards in England. He is. at present (says the "Southland Times") considering the , offor of a practice in Southland, and contemplates settling down to work; and althougi •. he is not likely to play football again, there is no doubtthat he will otherwise take an activo interest, in the national winter game. Mr. Cyrus J. R. Williams, .engineer to the Lytteltpn Harbour Board, left by the Moeralri on Thursday for' Sydney, where he will join the P. and O. steamer Moldavia, for Europe. Mr. Williams is proceeding Home to obtain reports on the Fruhling and' otherl dredging systems for the board.

Josiah Ward, who comes to Wellington under the' itinerancy system, received from the Methodist Conference on Thursday a special vote of thanks for his excellent services aa editor of the Methodist section of the "Outlook." Various speakers bore testimony to the value of Mr. Ward's work, and to the ■ very satisfactory manner in which the Methodist columns of the journal had been conducted. Mr. Ward exercised a very wise discrimination in selecting matter for the printer, and at the same time was, in his editorial capacity, a model of urbanity. , •■■•■■•■■

A money difficulty has been troeEDag the Dunedin Society for Promoting the Health of Women and Children. No money has been paid to the society by tho Government for the 1907-OS year. Tho sum of .£SOO was placed on the Estimates for that year, and, though repeatedly applied for, was not paid, wherefore tho vote has lapsed. Tien, during the last session .£BOO was voted to be divided amongst the various branches of "the society, and .£SOO to the Knritano Home. This JCSOO has not been paid (states fl» "Otago Daily Times"), and of the £8& the sum of .£2OO is not paid. The following telegram has been sent to the Prime Minister and the Minister Cot Internal Affairs:—"We would urge you to pay the £M for Karitaae Home before March 31, as society fears vote lapsing and money being lost to it, as in 1907. We also uigo that tho .£2OO not yet allocated to branches be allocated as suggested in society's letter, Janoary 31 last, to AHnister Public Health. ,We hope this will reliere the disappointment at lapsed voto previously referred to."
